    Question Gear Install?

I was wondering if anyone knew of a good gear installer in the area? I am going to put some 4:10's in my Snake and am looking for someone who can put them in right. Dont want to go to just some place and pay way to much to have them put in. Thanks in advance.

A local dealer let's their mechanics do work on the side in the shop on the weekends. If you'd like I can ask a couple of contacts for a recommendation, but it's a dealer you know well....

Someone in the club has a local contact in Charleston that does it on the side for a couple of hundred bucks. Just can't remember...

    Just let me know.

    Dave,
That would be great. That pretty much sounds like what I am looking for. I just want the guy/girl to know what they are doing with the IRS. That is my biggest concern right now. Please let me know if you can find out something. Thanks alot!

The swap is the same as with any other Ford 8.8 rear end. As a matter of fact, the center pumpkin in all 8.8 is the same regardless of whether it is a live axle or IRS. The 8.8 IRS rear end like in your Cobra first appeared in the Mark 8 in about 1990 or so. It is not a new unit but one that has been around for a while. But are you sure you want to go with 4.10? You will have to shift an awfull lot in a 1/4 mile. And your traction issue will be compounded. Turning up the boost is a much easier answer to a quicker car but if you don't want to go that route then look into an Apten ported blower. It should be the answer to a stock look that is quicker. If you turn up the power and lower the gears, it can be miserable. If you had a paxton or vortech or something that made more power on the top, I would not try and discourage you but as you have a roots blower that tends to be real torque biased, then I say stick with 3.55 or 3.73. It will be quick and enjoyable day to day. Otherwise you may be in overdrive before the end of a 1/4 mile run.

    I ran 4.10's in a Fairlane(along with 5.14's)

Cruising speed with the 4.10s was 55 mph

1/4 mph was from 114 mph to 137 mph according to the timimg equip. avg about 117 letting off at the lights.(Big Block) 28 inch tires I think.

The gear man in Columbia is Irby Goff.

just a comment, I am just a shoe man.

I have debated over the 4:10's or the 3:73's for a while now. I had the 4:10s in my old Cobra (97) and absolutly loved them. I understand that I will be shifting alot more but I dont race at the strip alot. I just want them for cruising around and the occasional pass on the strip. Like I said, I had them on my old one and it was the best mod I ever did to my car. Thanks though D for the heads up. Hopefully someday I wont be saying D told me not to get these . Hey Dave, any word?

    Thanks.

Kris- even if you do regret it in the long run, it will sure be fun. Just find someone who will sell you new tires cheap. I bet you will go through at least one set real quick - But what fun it will be! I want to go for a ride! (BTW I go through Discount Tire DIrect for my Nittos. I also always check Tire Rack for anything else in that size. Those two are by far and away the cheapest I find even when you include S&H.)

Thanks for the tip on the tires. I would be more than happy to take you for a ride. I just want to get them in!

If they are Ford gears, then it will be easier than if they are aftermarket. But in any case, there is a good shop here in Pawley's Island at Tidelands Ford. They have a Ford master tech named Robbie Glass who is excellent. Isn't there a Drivetrain Services (DTS) in Charleston? They did some work for me in Columbia and fixed things nobody else could. I can't help anymore than that unless you can travel.

You have Flowmasters, right? And now you are changing to 4.10 gears? Your neighbors are going to hate you especialy as you come home late on a Saturday night/early Sunday morning. If they complain too much, just leave earlier in the morning and louder.
