Just wondering that I changed the oil in my 03 Cobra vert I noticed it was down about a qt.at 2900 mi.I did oil change with filter and 6 qts. of oil, and it shows about a qt. low. Also the SVT insert shows 5W20 Premium Motorcraft oil when the owners manual shows a syn. blend of 5W20.The main problem I see is the Motorcraft Premium is 5W30.Also cant find any pure syn. oil in 5W20.

Mine takes 7 quarts to fill it up after an oil and filter change. On the first change, I used Pennzoil 5W-20 oil. Second change I'm trying the Motorcraft 5W-20 semi-synthetic oil. The next change I'm going to use and continue to use Mobil 1 5W-30.

JUST CHANGED MINE LAST WEEKEND FOR 2ND TIME AT 2100 MILES. 6 QTS AND IT SHOWED 1 QT LOW ON THE DIPSTICK TOO. IS THE DIPSTICK WRONG OR DOES IT NEED 7 QTS.
ROYAL PURPLE JUST CAME OUT W/ A 5W20 SYN. RUN IT 12,000 MILES AND CHANGE THE FILTER AT 3000 MI INTERVALS AND THEN TOP OFF.

Must be fun to change the filter without changing the oil :wtf:

I don't recall the official capacity but I think it's 6.5 quarts with a filter change. Anyway, that's the amount I put in this car and the amount that I put in my '99. The dip-sticks are also annoying because they don't read full at the top of the indicator. Mine reads full in the middle of the indicator. It did this on my '99 too.

See the 03 Cobra oil post on svtgarage... About to change mine now at 2300 miles. Will comment re 6 or 7 quarts after I put 6 in to start with. Anyone call the SVT hotline re quantities? Goodluck to the fellow using PennZoil; never had much a lotta good with it myself over the long haul.

How can you tell you are exactly one quart low? As long as the dipstick oil mark is between MIN and MAX, you are OK.
Also the SVT insert shows 5W20 Premium Motorcraft oil when the owners manual shows a syn. blend of 5W20.
The stock fill-up is semi-synth Motorcraft 5W-20.
Also cant find any pure syn. oil in 5W20.
Why go 5W-20 when you should go 0W-30 or 5W-30? Amsoil, Red Line, Motul and NEO are considered the top synthetics.

Call the Romeo Niche Line and/or the SVT hotline.... The oil inserted into 03 Cobra engines is 5W-20 Valvoline. probably the "All Climate", product. It is not a totally synthetic or synthetic blend, rather a straight petrol product. HOWEVER, the oil to use forethwith upon change is the Motorcraft 5W20 synth-blend or the relatively equivalent Valvoline "Durablend" 5W-20 synthetic blend. No guarantees implied. Have fun with your rocket...

To be confirmed...

I agree. The initial oil change after factory fill-up should be a semi-synth. Then stick with the Group V and IV lubricants: Amsoil, Red Line, Motul, NEO or Royal Purple.

Thanks OX, et al.,
The fellow I spoke with at Romeo strongly recommended staying with a 5W-20 semi/synth or synth-blend, as I asked him about alternate vis ranges and types.
My first change here at 2300 miles inserted Motorcraft Premium Synthetic Blend 5W-20, especially since I couldn't find any Valvoline Durablend 5W-20 near where I live.
Put in 6 quarts and the dipstick is about 1/8" over the max line, but I haven't started the engine yet to fill the filter.
My unit was at the "Max" line when I took delivery at 8 miles, but it used about 3/8" on the dipstick in the first 500 miles and stopped there.
Recommend checking your dipstick and tube... My part #F85E-6750-BA dipstick is 24-3/8" from the plastic stick-stop flange (at/for the top of the tube) to the "Max" line or 25-11/16" from the stick-stop flange to the "Min" line. The base of the stick-stop flange is about 7/16" above the metal-to-plastic pinning-point of the metal wire-wrapped "rod". I do not know what is inside the wire-wrap but the dipstick is SAE registered, which should stand for some durability I presume. However, if it is kinked, etc. it could read "low". ANOTHER item to check would be the diptube. Has it moved out of its engine block mount?

After firing up the unit following the oil change and subsequently letting it cool, the dipstick was halfway between "Min" and "Max". Added a half quart to bring it to near "Max". Sum total prox 6.5 quarts.

My '01 did and now my '03 registers low when I add 6 quarts with a filter. I called the SVT hotline and was told that 6.5 quarts was the max you should add when changing oil. They say it may take that much if you allow your engine to "drip" clean instead of immediately putting the drain plug back in.
They also said as long as you are between the MIN and the MAX you are good to go.
Also, something to remember. Excess oil robs HP. So we are probably better off running towards the low end if you check your oil very often. Especially if you run any 5W20!
Any oil recommended for a base Focus or Honda Civic just doesn't seem to have enough balls for a 400+ HP supercharged engine, IMO. I will contnue to run Mobil 1 5W30 in the summer. But what do I know? It just makes my 'old school' mind rest easier! :wtf:

Amzoil (www.amzoil.com) makes a 5W-20 Synthetic oil that meets the specs for Ford. Also I e-mailed Mobil 1 and they replied that they will have a Synthetic 5W-20 out in March of '03.
