View Full Version : TINNY resonating sound?

I was wondering if anyone might be able to help me...
My car has a TINNY resonating sound at low speed (ie. just before I stop the car in my drive way, turning at light, slowing down to a stop). It seems to be coming from beneath the car. I just had my mechanic rotate my STEEDA SHORT RAM away from the metal wall separating it from the battery. Could it be that it's now vibrating on something else? or is it something else?
Has anyone else heard this sound? Any ideas?
thanks in advance

cat heat shield.
the dealer will just put hose clamps around it, so you can do that yourself and save yourself the hassle.

Off-road pipe will rid you of all of those CAT issues including your warranty!

Last year I had seen the shield hanging... I went into the dealership later in that same week but by that time it had fallen completely off. They said that I could leave it off and not to worry about it affecting my warranty. They just said not to park on any dry grass!
So is there any other suggestions?

My heat shield had fallen off too. When my service department fed me the same line about leaving it off and that it really wasn't needed, I simply threw in the line about liability.....
I threw a hypothetical in there about me parking on some grass, the car catches fire, and then the dealership could be liable for knowing about the issue and failing to correct the problem when it was brought to their attention.
I had a new heat shield on the car in 30 minutes. :D
Of course now that one is loose again and rattling. lol

I've noticed that my car is making a tinny rattling noise when decelerating from higher rpms, and during the 1-2 upshift at times. I'm glad to hear that this seems to be a common issue.

With the description that I have previously posted, is there any chance that my problem might be the "PREMATURE CLUTCH ISSUE"?
Can anyone that has had their CLUTCH replaced with the above TSB care to comment?
In the meantime I'll check to see if the sound will go away with the depression of the clutch.

Same problem here. Was told by the dealer that it was the Cat Shield. Well, it isn't even on anymore so it can't be that, could It!! Then they said it was a resonance in the exhaust. Only seems to happen around the 4k mark or around there. It is on every one of my shifts as long as I rev to 4k. If I rev to 3500 and shift gears, never hear it. It's annoying as hell! It started on only the 1-2 shift and Sometimes on the spin down above 4k when coming to a stop. NOW it is always there!!!!! Good Luck Guys!!!!! :wtf:

There is a two piece bracket the is behind the engine that has one half bolted to the cat pipe and one half bolted to the block.
Mine snapped off on the cat half of the bracket just behind where the two brackets bolt together.
The cat half of the bracket is part of the cat pipe and can not be gotten seperately, I just had my cat replaced under 8-80 federal emmissions warranty because technically, if the bracket is broken then the cat is broken and the cat is covered under 8-80.
Not all dealers will play nice though so I would reccomend putting your car up on jack stands, lay down under it and find the bracket I am talking about, then move the exhaust up and down and see if the bracket is broken, you can also tap on the pipe with a rubber mallet to find the rattle.
They may look at it and try to charge you for it and since the emmisions are not actually affected by this bracket they can try to weasel their way out of the warranty repair.

Took it in and asked if it could be the tranny/flywheel problem... they put the car on the hoist and they think its the heat shield. I kind of balked at that stating that I had it in earlier in the year with that exact problem and it had fallen off (and they said leave it).
But they stated that the top may be culprit. and that they found the bottom still there??? that was baffling since I had seen it hanging there back in December and had taken it in...but by that time it was gone.
They plan to replace the heat shield but they will need it for the day since it requires them to lower the exhaust and order the parts from the states, (Brampton didn't have them in stock).
My question is to all those out there with the cat shields missing...has your car eventually started creating that tinny resonating/rattling sounds at low rpm's? ...and if so why wouldn't they (FORD) tell people to replace them or else risk the problem of the rattling noise???

My problem ended up being the heat shield. One was missing (bottom) the other loose (top) and the bracket was cracked. All of which created a tinny reasonance when decelerating.
It's so much nicer listening to the air intake instead of the tinny rattling that I've been listening to the last couple of weeks! It's fun to drive again!

lammer,
Thanks. I'm taking my car in and droping it off on Thur for this problem. I'll let them know what to look for and hopefully they won't give me a hard time.
Thanks again!

Well I took it in and they finally heard the noise but by the time it was up on the jack stand, it went away. Ughhhh!!!!! I'm taking it in next Thur to try again while I drop off the car for some maintenance.

My guys heard the tinny reasonance as soon as they started it up...sounds like they did too??? They knew what it was with that initial sound... tell them to get it off the hoist and start it up and move it forward 6 inches under low revs.... they'll hear it!

We actually test drove it around the night before and couldn't get it to resonate! They kept it until the next morning and they got it to rattle but it went away as soon as they got it into the shop again. It went from an avg of 65deg or so to 93 lately so I'm guessing that the temp has something to do with it. It used to do it every day and constantly when it was colder but now it's back to intermittent and I don't know why. They checked the Cat shield and bracket as well and it all seemed ok. Atleast their trying to figure it out and not blowing it off like the last dealer did.

Well, I finall found some time to take my car to the dealership for this noise. They couldn't find anything wrong the first time, so I took it back to them. They said that the noise in my case was coming from a broken flex pipe.

Ford has now released the cat bracket as a seperate part.
P/N 4M5Z-5A204-A They must have gotten tired of paying warranty on the cat.

I've removed both cat shields in the past and have since gone to ORP and had another tinny rattling sound this week; turned out to be the heat shield
behind the power steering rack near the ORP.
