View Full Version : Can I make my lil hood scoops functional?

Hello all. I think it would be very cool, if the two little hood scoops on my 97 Cobra could be made into functional ram air entrys or if i could find a replacement hood that looks stock with ram air on it. The only ones i could find are from cervani, which look great with there more agresivly shapped body kits, but i don;t think they would look right with the oroginal rounded look the car has. I like the current look, in fact i love it, so i want my car to look stone stock. Does anyone have any info/ideas about how i can make this happen? I'm aware that the scoops are small, and not really ideally placed for ram air, but i think it could happen, and give a small performance gain, not to mention pick up a LOT less water than most in the fender ram air systems that are availible. THanks for any input u guys might have.

The scoops are not big enough for ram air.

I have seen some people use a dremel tool and make an opening about the size of my fist for more cooling though.

I agree that the 96-98 Cobra hood is the coolest looking hood to ever come on a Mustang! Unfortunately, it isn't practical to make a functional ram air hood, but as Larry said, you can open the scoops to allow for cooling.

How 'bout relocating your fog lights inboard behind the lower grill and installing ducting from the right side foglight opening into your air box or directly onto your CAI? There was a 'how to' out there somewhere. All of the parts come from Home Depot! Do a search - somewhere!? I may have a hardcopy of the article lying around my shop. I'll have to look. SNAKEYE is Vortech-equipped with the K&N within the fender. I was going to try to rig something this Spring when the weather breaks, not so mush for ram-effect as for cooler air. But then how cool can the air be 6" above the asphalt? Cooler than inside the fander?

I did this at the rear of the hood liner. There are two holes that are tied into the nostrils that should help get a little more cool under the hood. I am hessitant about cutting into my original hood to make the holes directly under the nostrils bigger.

Do we really need the hood liner? If you had, say, a track car that you didn't car about noise, would there be any other reason to keep the hood liner? Cause then it would be easier to open up the scoops, not that it would help. But I hate explaining to my friends "Yes, it's a Cobra. No, the scoops aren't real".

I thought the liner protected the paint on the hood. But...my buddy took his liner of and has had no problems.

Confirmed! I was at a Cobra meet yesterday, where we had over 45 Cobras, and I saw at least 10 without hood liners (maybe more, many had their hoods down), and they have had no problems. They were mostly '03-'04's, it helps with their vents, and makes clearance for Whipples.
