I'm building an in car camera mount, and I have discovered that the measurements called for in the instructions I pulled off the web are much smaller than the drill holes that I need (Focus headrest posts have a MUCH larger diameter). Because of that, the holes I need to drill are beyond the tools I have on hand.

Does anyone here have access to a drill press that could drill me a 3/4" hole between two pieces of box aluminum? I figure a drill press would make quick work of this as opposed to a hand drill which tends to bite down between the two pieces.

Unfortunately I can't take my headrests off so the hole has to be drilled between so I can sandwich the pieces around the posts.

why cant you take the headrests off?

I dunno, maybe it is a feature of the recaros or something. I pulled and pried but the things wouldn't come off, even by pushing in the little lock thingy that allows them to go back down.

doesn't really matter though, as the plans I have call for sandwiching the two pieces together.

That cant be right. I wouldnt call that a feature. I would call it a POS!

What about the back seats? are they the same way? Shouldnt be. Otherwise you couldnt fold your seats flat unless you eat the steering wheel in order the get the seat back to clear the folded down back seats.

heh, no the last thing people say when they sit in my Recaros are that they are a POS. THe way the headrest is shaped there really isn't a need to raise them, so this is my first experience really messing with them.

no the back seats I can take those off all day long. THere is nothing different about the back seats from the stockers.

Crazy. I dont care how nice the recaros are, if you cant take the headrest off (that is if they are supposed to be able to do that) then they are a POS or the owner is. LOL!

thats the thing, I dunno if you are supposed to be able to or not. regardless, it wont affect the plans I have for the camera mount.

As long as you get it worked out. See you in OKC here in a month or so.

yeah, that's what I'm trying to get the mount built for. :)

I would love to have one but I have to get a digital camcorder first.

I wont be making it over for the dyno day but I am trying to get things worked out so I can make it to the driving school. I should have a better idea when I start getting moved in.

Let me get this straight. You have two pieces of rectangular aluminum that you want clamped together, then a hole drilled through them at the seam? If that's what you want you need to take it to a machine shop and have it milled out. A drill bit will try to push the two pieces aparts while drilling and you will be left with a crappy hole. An end mill will make a nice clean cut and won't try to push the pieces apart. If you want to drill it out, the way to do it would be to drill a hole in a solid piece of aluminum, then cut it in two across the diameter of the hole. Another option would be a 3/4" hole saw, but it won't make a real good hole either. You will also probably have to have a mill to spin a 3/4" bit, that's a lot of bit to swing. Your best bet is to take it to a machine shop and pay them to do it. It should only cost $20-30 to have them mill a 3/4" hole. DK Machine in BA does my machine work, but he's been very busy lately and might not be able to get it done right away.

yeah, even the instructions I have say that the drill will tend to bite down on the aluminum, but apparently the guy who wrote the instructions was able to do it for a 1/2 hole.

Eddie was able to remove the headrests from his Recaros tonight without a problem....

cool, that's good to know. i guess the locking mechanism on mine is just a little stiff cause it is never used.
