Hello, Matt here from Okc i am the proud new owner of a black 04 Cobra. I love this car. This is my first time to be on the message boards, and I have lots of question.

First of all has any one had trouble with or is not happy with the way there 03-04 Cobra shifter works. I feel that mine is hard to shift, not smooth or quick at all. this is more of a concern under hard acceleration. Has any one installed a new shifter? If so whitch one? Any feed back on this will be helpful.

Thanks
Matt

To me the stock Shifter for a lack of better word just plain sucks. I have the Steeda Tri-am in my 03 CObra and it is very nice. It is a tad bit louder than stock but the shifts are short, crisp, and I have not missed a shift since. I put a Pro 5.0 shifter in my dads car and his shifter throws are longer, but not as "notchy" as my Tri-ax. His Pro 5.0 is a bit louder than my Tri-ax but with the Borla Stingers being on both of our cars you cant hear the shifter noise much anyways. THe Pro 5.0 in my 97 Cobra is a good bit louder than the Pro 5.0 or Tri-ax in our 03's. I may sell my Tri-ax down the road to get a MGW shifter. I use the MGWltd.com Shifter Handle on my Tri-ax and love it but MGW is going to release a shifter that is like no other on the market. Here is a post that i made about it on our local site.

Good luck! Some people can live with the Stock shifter but for me it had to go.

Hey thanks for the info. I have a plain ol hurst in my 69 and it is a lot better then the one in my 04. When ford sent me the survey, I let them know about it, they did call me and I spoke with some one. Maybe that will help with the next Cobra, i am sure it will not help me. I will look into the ones that you have listed.

Thanks,
Matt

Wait a little while and check out the MGW shifter. MGW products are very high quality and it is cheaper than the tri-ax or pro5.0 shifter. It is infinitely adjustable and supposedly quiter than the stock handle. There are posts about it on most major Mustang BBs like svtperformance.com (Terminator forum), modularfords.com (terminator forum), corral.net (dohc forum), stangnet, etc...

Yesterday I received some products from MGW I ordered: Headlight switch, Power outlet (with Cobra on it) and their A/C knobs all with their Satin finish and their products are just top notch. I was really impressed. I'm definitely holding out until their shifter comes out.

The MGW Shifter is now available for the Cobra T-56!!! :allhail: :allhail: Check out this link for some details: http://www.fordpower.net/forums/showthread.php?t=105237 Ordered mine last week and will be shipping this week. :) :) There was a special of $185. that included both handles; otherwise $175. with 1 handle of choice and $24. for the other handle.

Installed my MGW last week and it is awesome. The best product out there. No question. I changed out a pro 50 and am not sorry at all. This shifter is of the highest quality I have ever seen. It also dampens noise transfered from the tranny to the handle. It IS VERY QUIET. I do recommend the second handle option. I installed the Blue handle but may change out to the Red for a more relaxed reach. George makes great quality products.

I have had my '03 for two years and hated the shifter the whole time, but there seemed to be shortcomings from all the available aftermarket shifters, so I waited until now. Have had the MGW for almost a month, and it shifts as well as any manual transmission made. It really would be "cheap" at twice the price. I did install their knob, but may go back to the Ford leather one for a better feel for me. I am 6'4" so sit with the seat a long way back, and I don't have to "unbuckle" to reach 3rd and 5th gears anymore. By the way, the install was absolutely brain dead simple. With their instructions you just can't get into trouble.

The red is a little smaller and they say it is more for racing but I am very tall & have long arms so the red is pretty good compared to the stock shifter. I havent played with the adjustment yet but I first want to put the blue handle on this weekend and compare the two

The red is the longer of the 2 handles. The blue is shorter and hense a shorter throw but a little reach. The red handle just fits in your hand better in a relaxed driving position. I had the blue one on for about 2 weeks and then switched to the red handle. The red one just fits me a little better. High quality for sure.

On the advice of this forum, I ordered a new MGW (Red) Shifter. I am hoping that this will finally solve one of the biggest complaints I have with my 2003 Cobra, the stock shifter sucks. What good is having that much horsepower if the thing takes forever to get into the next gear?
