SVT Archives say that the 98 SVTC came with Goodyear GS-C, 205/55AR-16. Now just out of curiosity I went looking at GS-C tires and holy moly they are expensive and I can't even find them in that size! Just to be clear I'm talking about original 98 and not the 98.5 (which I think switched to BF goodrich OE)

You're right on originals. Certainly no reason to go with GS-C's at this point-- newer tires are much better in terms of performance and life. I went with Goodrich KDW's on mine-- much better wet and dry traction and a good price. GS-C's are obsolete.

YOu are correct that is what they can with and I was told they don't make the exact same tire anymore and plus anything comparable was really expensive. I went with the Khumo 712 and I am on my second set and I like them.

does anyone know if the GSDs are meant to replace the GSCs?

Yes, they are actually 2 generations past the GSC as Goodyear's high performance summer tire (F1 was between, with F1 Supercar still used on some exotics).
