Hello all,
I own a white 97 Cobra, and my paint, let me say factory paint, is just falling off. It started on the gas cap cover last summer, I just thought maybe I spilled some gas or something just ate it up, took it off got it painted no big deal. Now the paint is almost completly off the back of my trunk and there is 4 other spots on the car, where the paint is just flaking off. The paint is literally just not sticking to the primer anymore, and really just falling off. Anybody ever seen or heard of this?

I haven't seen or experienced your problem personally, but the paint on SNAKEYE certainly wouldn't win ANY contest. It's cracky, chippy, dull, and more of an off-black than black. the paint on the afte-market spoiler puts the factory paint job to shame.
Is there any chance that your car had been repainted in a previous life? Perhaps a crappy repair paint job is starting to show?

I have a white 96 with factory paint and other than a fisheye on quarterpanel and paint coming off sealer in trunk rail area, my paint is fine. :) Perhaps some areas of your Cobra have been refinished?

Oh yeah, the best looking parts: the after-market spoiler and the left quarter panel that was factory-bad and was repainted. The trunk lid almost looks gray as compared to the spoiler. I just noticed that the black is disappearing from the top edge of the rightside door handle, like it was buffed too hard (or didn't have much paint on it to begin with!). The tops of both front fenders look like they had tiny blisters that popped and left a tiny slit or scratch in the paint. My '95 minivan is black and looks fine except for normal wear and tear. The paint job on my '98 New Beetle has got to be one of the best looking factory paint jobs I ever saw, and remains so.
One would think that after 100 years they'd have the painting figured out.

I am currently having the same exact problem with my white 97 Cobra. The paint is falling off of the trunk to the right of where the license plate area is. I have mine scheduled to be repainted next week.

Maybe they had a bad batch of White paint in '97. You're lucky, Herb. :tmb:

I haven't heard of this either. My Cobra is doing great and the paint was awesome. I however took it in last week and had some paint done to the bumper (my fault scratched the paint up).

Back when I had a 89 Mustang G.T. the paint did exactly what you described and Ford had a recall and repainted the whole car. If memory serves my correct it was all colors that year. Any chance there is a "SILENT" recall?

Are you sure it hasn't been repainted? I have never heard of this on any Cobras over on SVTP's forum in over three years of posting/reading.

My nephew has a white 96 Mustang GT that has a peeling roof, decklid and door. Meanwhile my white 96 Cobra doesn't exhibit any signs of peeling. My car was built in January 1996, not sure the build date on nephews car though.

I would start here http://www.ford.com/ In the search box type in 1997 Cobra recall and see what pops up. There is an advanced search option after the initial search. Good luck.
