View Full Version : idle problem?

My Focus is 3 weeks old. When I let off the gas, the tach drops very slowly. It hangs up a bit at about 3000-3200, then really sits at 1800-2000 for a long time (up to 20 seconds) before dropping quickly to idle. It does it hot or cold, I don't get it. It's mild enough that I don't know if it is a problem or not.
Anyone know what this is?

yes, this is well known and documented....just about everyone has it.

Everyone has it. OK.
Is there a way to fix it or does everyone just deal with it?
Is this fixed by the "new" ECU flash?
I searched for idle problems, but turned up nothing of real help. If it's "documented", what is it called?

i think most people just put up with it. I got an ECU flash a while back when I had an O2 sensor replaced. I've not seen it hover in the 2-3k range anymore, but then again it's not something I pay much attention too anymore cause I was so used to it happening.

If the weather is cold, and you just start your car... it will do this... mainly because of the way engine was designed, it has to heat the cat up before it will drop in rpm(something like that anyways)... there have been may other threads on different boards about this so it is well documented...
It is normal and you'll get used to it
heres one thread about it

Mine does it, too. It only seems to be a problem when the engine is cold. I do like the way the engine lopes a bit when you first start it. The last time I had a car that did that was back in the early 1970's. Brings back fond memories of younger, tire smoking days.
By the way, has anyone really tried to smoke the tires on the Focus? Would have to turn off the traction control, for sure.

thanks for the info. Especially the thread. I certainly understand the warm-up feature, I just think it's wierd when it's still doing it after driving hard for an hour or so.
Although, it hasn't been a problem al long as I keep the pedal pinned to the floor! :)

well no it shouldn't be idling at 2-3k after an hour of driving. surging maybe, but it shouldn't idle at that.
