Well, I just got a new motor after toasting the last one. I have a question. I've put the initial 1,500 miles on there and it's time for an oil change. Is it wise to switch to synthetic now or wait until 5,000 or so? Thanks for any input.

I would switch to Synthetic as soon as possible.
I don't know where the thought of wating so many miles started. Some cars, Z06, come from the factory with synthetic.

Can't help with the brand/type oil to run in the new engine.
However, am deeply interested in what modifications you may have made to the engine and what you were doing when the piston let go.

As for modifications - running a Vortech SQ-2, MSD ignition, and that's about it for motor mods... plenty of suspension stuff too. It had 50420 when it blew on me. I put the blower on at 45K miles. I am thinking the cause was traveling from South Florida to Northeastern Wisconsin. riding at three grand kicking that boost is prolly the culprit. Let me know what ya'll think..

By the way, has anyone heard of the PATS Transceiver? The car ****ped out on me again and now I have to **** out 300 bucks for this device that "receives the signal from the chip in the car key and tells the motor to run" Am I getting jerked around, I've never heard of this thing? I suppose I will consult the Haynes' Manual to look as well. This car is nickel-and-dime'ing me to death except on a larger scale than nickels and dimes!!!

SNAKEYE (1997 triple black convertible) is running a Vortech in front of 4.10 gears. So far about 30K miles on the Vortech with new bearings and impeller at 25K. Ignition is stock except I lowered the spark plug gap to .042" to prevent blowout. 3000 RPM sustained shouldn't have been a problem as it should have been just on the verge of going into boost. From the picture it looks like the piston cracked from the ring groove. S**t happens! Good luck with the new engine.

The PATS transceiver is located on the left side of the trunk behind the liner, kind of directly opposite the fuel filler over on the right side. Besides communicating with the key, it apparently monitors other things related to the anti-theft system and will terminate engine operation if the car is tampered with.

Would anyone know off-hand if changing the fuse in the fuse box for the starter system would affect the transceiver? I rreceived a starter kill with remote that basically just replaces the diode bridge (which is 5 prong) with one that is four prong that only activates when you hit the remote. I thought it a bit coincidental that this happens a day or two after throwing that in the fuse box.
SNAKEYE Thanks for the info... I couldn't find the thing in my Haynes' manual so I thought it might have been a fictitious item concocted by the mechanic to get one over on lil' ol' me.
Hope my sc doesn't p00p out on me either. One motor, clutch, and various other little items are enough for me. After all the thing is that high mileage yet. My 93 lasted 140K miles with only the clutch going bad and that was at 120K miles! Well, here's to no more problems ( I hope )

I just browzed thru the CD-ROM service manual looking for stuff on the anti-theft feature and find that there is a PATS module AND an anti-theft transceiver module.
On the outside chance that a fuse is the culprit, take a look at fuses #6, #16 & #18. They all appear to have something to do with power to the modules above. I skimmed thru subjects like engine cranks/don't start and engine doesn't crank, and saw no mention of the PATS or transceiver modules.

Well, the dealership called me back, said they replaced the module, and now the error codes read for the another module ($200+). After what you told me I assume it's the anti-theft module perhaps? I didn't see any burnt fuses on my initial check of the fuse box but then again I didn't pull out each and every one. This mistake may have just cost me $600. I'm getting real tired of these newer cars. I wish that drunk driver hadn't totaled my 93.

you only get to have detonation ONCE on a stock motor...
sounds like that's how the motor blew up.
ring lands are notoriously weak in these motors...
if you have the stock ignition and hit the rev-limiter, that'll cut the fuel supply under boost...
bye bye #8 cylinder
bye bye # 7 cylinder...
i should know, i did the dame thing to my motor.
replace your stock diode bridge or whatever it was you changed before you spend any more $$
it could be the culprit.

I've left the starter kill as is. It turns out the MSD box was the culprit. Apparently water got into the box, or so they say. As for the motor, next time the block will be done up much stronger. :)

it was under the battery tray, as that's where Steeda installed it. next time around it will be located elsewhere. :tmb:
