Ok check this-

I put in Royal Purple engine oil in my SVTF a couple weeks ago. With the gas prices soaring I have been paying attention to my mpg. Now, I try to shift at 4k rpms or less, I hardly ever get the rpms up period and I drive around town at a little over 2k. This last tank of gas got me 30 mpg in town.

I believe the best I was able to get before RP oil in town was 25 mpg. I just got 30 mpg IN TOWN?!?! What is everybody else's mpg? Am I right in thinking that the RP oil I put in is the best thing that happened to me?

I use Mobile One and also have been driving like you. Taking it easy and get into 6th gear as soon as i can. Lately my mpg has been 25-27 in town and just this past weekend took a 250 mile trip and got 34 mpg on the highway.

i just can't run in those gears anymore....tulsa drivers are the biggest retards and I need it in a lower gear to get the hell out of their way most of the time.

I still get 19 - 20 MPG... I use mobile 1...

That's good though...

Oh cool. So Royal Purple oil does increase gas milage. Hey, I'm a testimonial.

is that because they use that oxegenated 91 crap up there?

probably... I don't think you can get any other gas than the oxygenated stuff...

Even Chevron has it...

unfortunately I don't have that luxury... Uncle Sam says live here and I don't have much choice... However I will be here only 1 more year...

Maybe I'll get lucky and move to South Dakota like I want and they won't have it there?!

I get mid-20's in town and had 37 on my vacation. Made me very happy. I have a lot of trouble keeping my foot off the floor most of the time. Just started running regular gas because of the prices. Noticed a little roughness at low rpm's under load, and doesn't accelerate as quick, other than that it's tolerable.

That is not what your engine was made for. http://bbs.off-road.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/chair.gif
IMHO, your gas mileage drop will probably negate any cost difference.
I'm sure there's other folks that will chime in about this issue too.

Wow, no matter what the prices get I'll never run regular gas in my tank. You're brave.

Not even mid-grade...
Has your "Check Engine" light gone on yet?

Ya, I gotta agree, I might try running some 89 if I were stranded, but if you're using 87 I think you're just asking for trouble.

The :hbomb: kind of trouble!

Here, this is about the best explaination of octane that I've run across.

The 50 bucks you will save a year buying the cheap gas will never overcome your poorer mileage and the inevitable repair bill from all the pinging

It's actually not that bad as far as the performance drop and the mileage difference is negligible. I put the requested premium in every 3-4 tanks. I did the same thing with the Taurus SHO I had and it was still strong after 220,000 miles when I traded it. Of course it had a japanese built motor.
