i installed the cabin air filter. the cowl on this 2002 SVTF is missing one of two white retaining pins (the outer one is gone). does anyone have a part no. or experience with this part. it's pretty silly, except the cowl does not sit down well and it becomes necessary to go crazy with a butyl windshield seal to hold things down.

you are going to hate this, but they are part of the cowl, cant get them separate.

Ouch. I took the RH cowl vent panel to the local dealership... but there was a lack of conviction that they (we) would ever manage to get the pins. Do you know if these cross-reference to other Foci models? Years?

I have not priced the cowl vent panel, but this has to be a $50+ part. Ugh.

try $80+ at least that's what it cost on paper when they did a warranty replacement on it.

Thanks for the info.

I just received the part number below and a schematic. The schematic is poor (not enough detail), but this may be the right part.

Ford 1S4Z-5402228-CA $48.99 (avail. 20-25% off online at $36-$39).

Does this jibe with your invoice?

Upon closer inspection, it appears I have a modified vent panel. One end of the "scooped" part that apparently keeps water away from the cabin air intake has been broken off. The vent panel was sealed against the windshield by someone with great affection for butyl rubber (sooo much goop).

Perhaps this was preventative (explaining the goop), the car had a leak (no signs of this; it's a used vehicle), or maybe someone replaced the windshield and removed the panel with excessive enthusiasm.

The little pin slides right out. I can't believe it's not a standard Ford fastener. The panel was removed at least once. I guess the part was broken or lost.

no, I had tons of that butyl rubber goop on my 02. I didn't see any when I put the filter in on my 03 though.

Don't mean to hijack the thread, but please educate me on the cabin filter. Does the SVTF come with one and you guys are talking about replacing it or is it an add-on?

The Purolator (www.pureoil.com) website has instructions in a PDF file. IIRC, the two plastic fasteners not discussed directly by Purolator. These unfasten by pulling upward on the cowl vent panel after removing the center screw and screw expander, and unfastening the three clips at the front of the cowl vent panel. Lots of pictures and help available.

No? The part no. is different? Bummer for me.

I took a longer look at the schematic and I am a little more relaxed about the pins. The schematic shows only two plastic male/female fasteners (one per side), but having removed the female part from the car, I can't help but believe these parts are available separately. The metal fabrication is simply too elegant not to have these plastic parts available by the bagful.

No goop on the '03? And no goop required by Ford. Something happened to my SVTF. I wonder what?!

apparently Ford replaced both cowls because I have the part number you stated, plus 2229

The clips that hold the cowl vent panel down are available in packages of four, unless your dealer stocks them loose items. Part no. W703475-S300. There are three components to each fastener: (1) fastener base for cowl-side (black; normally fused in place); (2) male pin (slides into (1) above); and, (3) female receptacle (the fitting clips into the cowl body panel that holds the cowl vent panel).

I promptly lost a male part lining up my vent panel. Resorted to some non-hardening putty to keep the male pin from getting lost into the deep recesses of the body. In other words, darn if I can tell where the pin dropped?!

Used some butyl rubber too. Why not. It's messy, but ain't no water going to puddle up due to anything related to the cowl vent panel or cabin air filter or anything else save from a serious defect in design.

The plastic cover for the center screw is also available. Yep, I lost that too! Five in a package. About a buck each. I couldn't help but buy the new plugs figuring I had gone so far to get things right, what's the point in stopping now?!

I hope this helps anyone encountering problems fooling with the cabin air filter.

Has anyone ordered a cabin filter from an online supplier? A google search only turned up a couple and I'd like to know if anyone's has luck buying one off the net. I know I could have a parts store order one, but it's less hassle to order off the net. Thanks.

http://www.partsamerica.com/ ~$18

Better, call local Napa parts dealer and use credit card over the phone. AAA discount in northern Calif. 10%. I think the Napa part (Wix from Poland) was, incl. tax, < $13 out-the-door.
