This might not seem signifigant unless you know that the left wheel was pointed straight.

the tow truck guy was having a hard time finding a piece of the frame that WASN'T BROKEN....but as you can see, none of the glass broke. You can also see part of the deflated side airbag.

Inteller, so we all know... What happened when the side air bags went off?
I think the dealers should have a test room where you can see the air bags go off inside your vehicle...
do the side bags come forward or just fill next to the seat? As well with the front air bags did they form a wall or was there big spaces between them?
Just so we have some expectations of what to expect when and if we ever spear our foci?!?
Thanks!

well for a split second I thought things were a LOT worse than what they were. The gunpowder or whatever started smoking really bad and I thought a fuel line had ruptured, so I got the hell out of the car. the smoke from the bag continued to fill the car, and the fire people thought the car was on fire when they got there....but I opened the door and let it all out so they could see.
I would have NOT wanted to be the passenger. It would have probably burned them to some degree.

Oh thats very reasuring! Did it actually catch fire? Or was there just a bunch of the powder? I thought that they were packaged with powder like in latex gloves so they don't stick togeather!? Also that they were "fired" by a CO2 cotridge or something similar and not a flamable substance?
Guess I'll look more into it when I get time!

well i know there was a stream of smoke (think cigarette size smoke) coming from one corner of the airbag. Yeah there was some powder that had dispersed....but there was smoke too.

Inteller...glad you were not injured. What actually happened? Did you collide with another car or other immovable object?
Also, my brother is an engineer retired from Hercules (now Alliant). His specialty was rocket propellants, nitro, and various explosive powders. He tells me the gizmo that sets off most air bags is similar to a shot gun shell....it does use some form of explosive powder.

i came to a stop after dodging a stopped vehicle on the road and was then hit by a dodge dakota who didn't know how to apply brakes. As you can see I was hit at a pretty high rate of speed. The car was knocked around and moved about 10 feet. The Dakota stopped about a 100 feet on up the road. Had it been a more side on impact I would have been creamed. Fortunately it was a glancing blow.

So being the nerdy car guy that you and we all are...what did it look like underneath after it got hit? I am sure you didnt have much time but HECK you took some pictures immediately so I am sure you scrutinized the damage. Did it completely screw up the rear suspension and stuff?
Also did interior panels come off.
I unfortunately got hit on the drivers side on the door pillar...either not severe enough for airbags or they didnt work...interior panels flew off, door was "frozen" shut from impact, window wouldn't roll down, quarter panel was completely wiped, it even tweaked the bumper. I think I'm gonna get rid of it when I get it back...the frame on my was also tweaked a little too. MORE bad news...the guy who hit me didn't have his headlights on at night on a rainy day...unfortunately I pulled in front of him so it was "technically" my fault...not as lucky as you Inteller!
 :bash:

yes the rear panels popped out. The trunk was 6 inches more narrow. Even the sub box popped out. At least 2 sub members of the frame were completely broken. The axle itself was bent about 10 degrees. On the front the damamge was less apparent but at least both tie rods were bent/broken.
i dont see how that could have been your fault if he indeed didnt have his headlights on.
