This news just came to my attention. There had been rumors about this for some months now. I know most of you are not into to drag racing, but for those who don't this may be of intrest also.

Glad to see its not going away, even though I don't race it.

Now if someone would just build a good road course here in Tulsa.

Did you read the part where there are plans to build a road
coarse at the end of the track? For those who Road Race.

David Guterman, the guy who bought the track used to be part owner of Hallett a couple of years back.

I have heard of the road course rumours, but there is no room on the land to do that. He would have had to buy some more of the land arround the track. My understanding is that the previous owners of TIR wanted to purchase some land at the end of the strip so that they could add the required run off area for big time racing, but could never get it done.

If they do build a road course here in Tulsa that would be great. The cost to run on it would be much higher than what we pay at Hallett and it could be setup as a club track, which means you have to buy a membership like a Golf country club does.

Lets hope for the best and at the very least a fixing up of the current facility.

BTW Mr. Gutterman drives a Panoz.

I'm of the opinion that any road course needs to be away from the current track and out towards BA or Bixby. Those are the only areas where wide open tracts of land still exist in Tulsa County. If you are going to build a road course do it right and not try to cram it in your existing cramped area.

also a thought came to mind when I was running around town listening to all the poseurs with catbacks and 90hp under the hood. Given that the new track is going to follow more strict rules, will the boy racers still have a place to go to spin their wheels without having to take it to the street?

The 2.3 mile roadcourse is scheduled for completion this year. There is a lot more land available than meets the eye. What I've been told is that track property extends all the way to 129th E. Ave. from Garnett. The existing fence on the north side is the north property line and the south property line is the south end of the field south of the track. If that is correct (I'm not 100% sure) the property is roughly 1 mile by 1/2 mile. That's more than enough to fit a road course on. If you drive the track all the way down to the last turnoff it's a pretty long haul, but maybe not a full mile. I guess the thing to do is drive up 129th and see if the track is visible from there.

Mr. Guterman has posted his intentions on local message boards and asked for input. My biggest concern is that our nice little racer friendly track will become like Heartland Park where you have to drive 1/2 mile from pit to starting line to make a pass.

so you are saying it is going to get beaten to death with rules? Well, if he can get the joint beefed up and get us on the circuit for some points matches and televised he can drag race all day long.....I'm all for it. He needs to make the place commercially viable. It will take more than local hobbists to keep it going.

I didn't say anything about the rules being more strict, you did. I don't think the rules will be any more strict than they have been the last 2 years. When Bo took over and they became an IHRA track there was a huge change immediately. Lots of people were not allowed to race that had been racing there for years. This shouldn't be an issue this time around.

then I guess I don't understand what your concern is about the the track becoming like Heartland.

The dragstrip at Heartland requires that a long drive be made from the pits to make a pass. This doesn't matter to the heavy hitters because they tow their car to the line anyway. For the guys like most of us who let our vehicles cool down for a while between passes it sucks. It does no good to let your engine cool down only to have to drive 1/2 mile from the pits to the starting line. One of the good things about our current facility is that you can let your engine cool off 100 ft. from the starting line and make a pass without it getting heated back up before the pass.

Ah ok, I see what you are saying. I guess any growing pains will have to be taken in stride. I'm sure soon enough there will be complaints that it only caters to the heavy hitters and all but at least there is still a track. Personally I just want paved parking instead of parking out in a field.
