Has anyone else had any problems with their cars driveshafts or differentials?

Lots of folks have had their driveshafts and rears replaced for the vibe. If you are putting down a lot of power, the driveshaft and half-shafts on the IRS are the weakest links. The diff is pretty stout from what I have seen/heard...

Can you elaborate? I also have a heavy foot, but have no problems. Maybe I'm not trying hard enough.

Mine is in the shop with 3400 miles on it. I was getting a vibration at speed. They replaced the driveshaft with no luck and are replacing the diff. as I write this.

I can understand if the driveshaft is out of balance causing a vibration but I find it hard to understand what the differential in the rear has to do with causing a vibration! I'm assuming Ford is using a traction lok dif. with clutch pak. If the rear is set up properly from the factory as far as backlash and pinion depth go, the differential requires no adjustment, thats why my opinion is that the rears were not set up properly. Has anyone with warranty work done for vibration questioned the service tech on exactly what they found and did to correct the problem?

All I know is that the diff they swapped in has a different part number, so they obviously changed/fixed something about it.

After noticing leaking fluid from the diff about a month ago, Ford replaced the front seal & yoke. About a week ago, I noticed it was leaking even more fluid. Went in to have it checked out today & was told that the silicone seal was the source of the leak, and now the car has to undergo about 6 hours of mechanical surgery just to take apart the IRS so that they can go in & s****e it & redo the seal. Hope it works this time. There's only one service tech, Jake, who I'll let touch my Cobra at this dealership, and he knows every square inch of my car. I think it best to have the same tech see the car all the time...especially for a recurrant problem.

well i did the same thing with about 1000 miles on the car.. the hole that you speak of was made by the mounting point for the rear end braking off the diff. cover... that is all that holds that rear end in place... once it brakes it sits the housing on top of the exhaust.. i found that the only way to keep the rear end from hopping so bad you think the dash is going to wind up in your lap is to instiall a hard lauch bar kit in the rear.. along with a set of ford racing coils that are a little stiffer.. after doing all this i'm able to drop the clutch on mine at about 4k rpm.. and pull a 1.78 60ft time.. Hope this helps...

thanks that clears up a few thing for me,unfortunatly it also did a good job of clearing my checkbook as the warranty rep said it wasnt covered.
