View Full Version : How far on a tank?

I was just checking out a mustang magazine at the store when I noticed an article about one of the editors experience in an SVTF. He was bragging about how far he could drive on a tank of gas (360-370miles). I have about 15k miles on my svtf and have only managed around 320-330miles.. granted I drive 75-80. How about the rest of you??

Your gut 320-330miles on a tank!?!?! WOW I get just over 200 miles on a tank! I get between 18-20 MPG... Now I live in Anchorage Alaska and most of my driving is "in town" but I'd love 300 miles to a tank!
Also does anyone else have issues with the local gas stations not selling 91+? I have to run octain boosters to make it above 90 that they sell here.

i cant get that much mainly because I romp on it and I run the air. I have gotten 310 once and that was all road driving.
also keep in mind that that 90 is the minimum rating. It is actually probably above that. Here the inspection stickers show that the octane content is actually 87+6 89+3 and 93+1 at the station that I use. That means that they are basically putting in the same gas for all three pumps. Please note that varies station by station. I only use Texaco cause they seem to do this, but other stations around really have the minimum and nothing more. Look around for the last inspection sticker on the pump and see if it has the actual measured octane.
now some of you are going to say, well that's bull****. Keep this in mind, gas has to deliver the same octane level over a period of time, and as soon as the gas is delivered it starts to degrade in the station's tank. It's basic physics and chemistry at work. So if you have a huge tank of 87, and you need to keep it at 87, you deliver it with a high octane rating. Not as important for the 91, cause you keep a smaller supply and move it. Now, should this mean you should go ahead and get 87? No, cause you don't know how long it is sitting there. However, if you were to get it right after it was delivered, it would be as good as the supply of 91 or 93, at least at my station. I still get 91 at least to be safe.

My best was 372 miles on a tank. It was a road trip, mostly all highway, no A/C. It averaged just shy of 32mpg. With mixed driving, I usually average 30mpg. (note, this in the summer)
Once the engine has loosened up, and I switch to synthetic oil, I'm hoping to see 35mpg. When driven "reasonable", my SVTF gets slightly better milage than my ZX3 power/premium.:tmb:

Yeah, daddy, we're actually a 3 Focus family! Geeze, the wife and I should do a commercial for Ford! My employer may not like that, however...
My ZX3 is an '02 also. Power/premium, sunroof, 5 spd, Liquid Grey(awesome color...to bad SVT doesn't offer it) The wife has a '01 4 dr SE with the mighty 2.0 SPI. A recent voyage from Seattle to Ohio netted 38 mpg, two people, and loaded with gear!
Strange, with all the problems you hear about with these cars, all 3 of ours have been flawless. Also interesting, my wife's SE is the most comfortable car she's ever driven. At 4'11 1/2"(:D ), she usually needs a pillow behind her back to be comfy. She fits in the Focus really well. Then my big, lanky 6'4" butt gets in there, adjust the seat, and I'm damn comfy too! No other car in this class can do that!:tmb:
We have other cars as well, but always find ourselves grabbing the keys to one of the Foci. Just wonderful little cars.:)

I have never got more than about 250, but then I've never run out of gas. Yesterday I got to about 250 with the gas light on for long enough for it to get scary. I can't imagine 300+. I've never tried for a good gas milage tank though, maybe I should.
Does anyone know about how far you can go with the gas light on (i.e. has anyone run out of gas)?

i know of a guy in a ZX3 who went 100 miles after the light. I wouldn't ever push it though.....you'd be sucking up a lot of junk in the bottom of your tank.

500km on a tank(city) and 600km highway. 9000miles on the ticker.

I average 280-290 miles a tank and it takes about 10.5 galons to fill it up. Not to bad considering that the window sticker read 21 city and 25 highway.
With 5500 miles in the odometer it is time to switch to synthetic oil. We will see if the claims of better gas milage are true.

Average 375-425kms. Just put in synthetic at 15000km and now at 16000k I'm not using any gas....Intake manifold cracked and should get car back in a week ( I hope). :)

Amaizing you mentioned this as my SVT might become a lemon law buy back but my wifes zx3 is awesome! Not one single problem with her's.
Sorry about the front view of my cars I can't ever post pictures on this site well.
Also a guy I met on here (phil) had his SVT bought back by ford and replaced it with a mazda RX8. So I have experence with the bad part and good part of the foci family

Thanks for letting me know your number (yes, I wish they were HP number too. lol) I've been running synthetic in mine for the last two oil changes, but haven't noted any changes with it. I do have a cold air kit and underdrive pulleys on it, but not sure what that would do for the distance per tank. Having a blast with it so far.

I just got back from a columbus, oh - cedar rapids, IA round trip this weekend. we made good time (about 8 hours) and at times averaged over 30mpg! A tank would get us at least 300 miles.
