I took a trip down through southern Delaware on Sunday on my way to Punkin Chunkin. Roughly 1/3rd of the trip was done on I-295 and the rest was stop and go down US Rte 13 and DE Rte 1 averaging about 45-50 MPG. Basically, city driving.

Total distance was 308.26 miles. The amount of fuel used was 18.012 gallons of fuel for an average fuel economy of 17.114 miles per gallon. Thats about 4 MPG above the rated 13 city by Ford. I imagine that if more of the trip was on uninterrupted highways, mileage would have been better.

Hey that's good. I looked at the sticker that came off my 2001 Lightning when I bought the truck new and it showed 12mpg for the city and 16mpg for the highway.:D

Geez! Really? My sticker said 13 city and 18 highway. I wonder if that is a difference between like a California car or not?

John,

I don't know what you mean by California car. I live in Tennessee and the truck was made at Ontario on 5/24/01.....

Yeah, I didn't notice that until after I posted. Too lazy to fix it I guess. I just don't understand why your mileage is rated lower than every other Lightning I have seen.

I don't know, but in bold on the sticker it has 12 mpg for city and 16 mpg for highway. It does say actual mileage will vary from 10-14 for city and 13 to 19 highway and it says for the "standard pickup" mileage ratings have been issued between 11-22 city and 14 to 28 highway.

My abysmal mileage is directly related to my right size 12. If I'm really being good I get 400 kilks on 90 litres, whatever that works out to.

:tmb:

Aside form that I noticed mileage goes down temps are below freezing, and it did go up after the break-in period.

Well, that would make sense because air gets more dense as it gets colder. the engine would compensate for the added air by adding fuel. gotta keep that optimum fuel/air ratio for best combustion. is 14:1 or something like that isn't it?

Oh and BTW, I saw a daily mile increase when I removed the boot between teh air box and fender like what was suggested in another thread. I didn't see a whole lot of improvement in power and it is alot noisier when cold. But I did notice that I went 1 more day without having to fill up than I normally do.

I removed my boot too as posted and i too did not notice any by the seat horsepower but i dont know.......and i should be getting my case of AMSOIL 5w-30 in the mail monday!!!!!! Couple that with a new air filter.......Hopefully a intake system from Santa....and i should see some more fuel economy. But for now my L is parked for the winter......except nice Fri night thru Sun drives.:tmb:
