I was just wondering if anyone could tell me what is the biggest pulley that you can put on a L and it still be a reliable daily driver? Right now I have a 4# pulley, but I am in need of more power and was considering a 6# or 8#. I would be greatful for any help.
Thanks

Good question. IMO it comes down to what level of risk you are comfortable with. From what I have read and seen, the stock rods can't handle anything over 6# on a regular basis and even at 6# you are on the edge.
In my ultra-conservative opinion, 4# is the max for everyday use.
What mods do have in addition to the 4# pulley?

I have Bassani Cats and cat-back system, Accufab Throttle body, airaid intake, diablo sport chip, and some suspension mods. I have, but not installed, bassani equa-length headers, an electric fan kit and cobra r waterpump. do you have any suggestions, besides NOS on what I could put on?
Thanks for the help.

Now I remember, I suggested NO2, maybe a powercooler or Extrude Honing a few threads back. You really have the bases covered as far as bolt-ons go. The only thing I thought of after the last thread was intercooler fans or a new torque converter. There is talk of a couple of new blowers coming out to replace the factory Eaton coming soon which are supposed to produce more boost. But now you are getting into the kind of power where upgrading the internals will be inevitable.
You should pick up 10 to 15 hp with the fan kit and water pump. Probably only another 8 to 10 from the headers. Have you considered long tube headers, the hp gain is supposed to about 20 hp. Maybe upgrade from the Airaid intake to a higher capacity intake system.

I am familiar with both websites. So you don't think the bassani headers are going to add that much? Do you know what I could do with them if I were to buy long tube headers? That's a lot of money i would have wasted on the bassani, that's what would bother me. I was actually considering a torque converter, but i'm not exactly sure what it does exactly, could you explain that to me please? thank you once again :allhail:

To answer your original question you can run 6lbs of boost and still be perfectly streetable as long as your tuning is done correctly. I have several customers including myself running 6lbs of boost and driving our trucks daily. Any more boost than that you are actually over working the M112 and creating power killing heat in the process and you are creating enough boost to start breaking rods too. The best way for you make some nice power gains is by installing some long tube headers.

Hey man, thanks for the tips. :tmb: Is there any place better than the other to buy some long tube headers? And how could I sell my bassani headers back? would the long tube headers fit with bassani cats?

As for selling you Bassanis I would post a few classifieds on some of the Lightning sites such as the NLOC. I sold mine there.

I'm pretty sure you will need new cat pipes to fit the long tubes since they are longer than stock.
Torque converters, complete Voodo to me. All I know is that you should pick up .3 to .5 in the 1/4 mile.
Here are some links I rounded up to help understand them, I'm going to give them read as well.

Hope it helps.

Well, I will look into those headers from your site. Thank you both for your help. So, what kind of cats would i need? those bassani ones were expensive, isn't there a way those could still be on?

It is nessary to change your mid pipes when installing long tube headers. Mid-pipes that have two high flow cats and an external x pipe as well. Doing a stall converter is a great move if you do alot of racing with slicks you can pick up 3 to 5 tenths in the quarter mile. Most of that gain will be in 60ft times. If you drive you truck on the street and dont plan on drag racing with slicks I would put my money elsewhere. The extra stall speed will hit regular radials too hard of the line causing excessive wheel spin. :tmb:

Hey, how much would it cost for new mid-pipes? why wouldn't the ones I have on now work? Yeah, i don't do a lot of drag racing, but i want to be able to take of the line fast and pick up fast while going at cruising speeds. What else do you have for me to help me out?

Well I would listen to dave; for advertising reasons he is not allowed to say that he runs a own shop in charolette NC that specilizes in Lightnings!!!!!! If anyone on the web, and I guarentee you they will, tells you to ask DAVE they are talking about David Laxton. He will be doing alot of performance mods to my 2000 Lightning real soon(around 10 December). Things like 90mm MAF, K&N air filter, Super Chip Flip chip, Spark Plugs, Boost By Pass, #6 pulley, Line mod Valve, and 4X4 trans pan. And best of all I asked him what it would cost me, the quote with labor was roughly what it would cost me from JDM just to buy the parts and have them shipped. So I looked at it as a win win situation. You get the parts and have a pro put them on for you at almost the same cost.
