Just got back from the 26th Annual Indiana Shelby Club Spring Fling in Nashville Indiana. It was an excellent event. There were 160 Mustangs in Friday's Pony Trail from the Brown County Park to the Bedford Indiana Racing Museum and back. Those winding Indiana back roads are a lot of fun for all Mustangs, Cobras, Shelbys and other Ford special interest cars. Jeff Ford, Editor Mustangs and Fords was the host for the Pony Trail. We took a second in class with the Cobra and the 66 GT.
We caravaned down on Thursday with 4 total Mustangs it was a nice just under 5 hour trip. Well our return trip from Nashville today was somewhat longer and eventful! We got to change 3 tires on the 66 and I left it in Crown Point Indiana at my brothers house! Thank goodness we had a small caravan of family on the way home.
Last August I had the belts separate on one of the rear Michelins that were 8 years old but only had 3K miles on them. It was like driving on an egg. I replaced both back tires and figured I would get another season out of the front! Wrong!!
About an hour north of Indy the car started to shake and drive very poorly. We pulled over and I checked the tires and lugs but couldn't really see anything wrong. We got back on the road and the car continued to shake. My Daughter in Law was in the car behind us and she called on the cell and said she could see the passenger side front tire shaking so we pulled over again. This time I could see the separated tread on the tire. We got out the jack that we have never used from under the spare in the 66 and found it didn't like being used. The Jack threads started to strip on the way up and as it let loose once I left skin from my knuckles on the road. On the way down with the car more jack threads stripped. It is toast. We'll need a whole new jack assembly as the ratchet would also not work. Good thing we brought along extra tools. We got the spare on and stopped at the first exit to check the tire pressure and the lug nuts.
Off again on the road after only a total delay of 50 minutes didn't seem bad. After another 1 hour on the road we started to shake again. I was hoping against logic that the spare was out of balance. We pulled over and here we go again! The drivers side tread was visibly separated. Now we have no working 66 jack and no extra spare! How many tires do you need? We drove slowly to the next exit and started to brain storm at the Diesel Mart or something like that Truck Stop. We were 35 to 40 miles from my brother's place in Crown Point Indiana and it is Sunday afternoon. Not many tire places are open and waiting to help at this time. One excellent family suggestion lead to another and the 97 Cobra Jack lifted the car and the little spare from the Cobra also worked on the 66. I have a smart family! We limped to Crown Point, and took the Cobra Spare off the 66 and put one of the eggs back on! We were not leaving the 66 with all the spares after the tire day we had so far. Who knew what lay ahead? We rearranged items in cars, piled all of Karen's and my stuff into the other two cars and left all the not urgent stuff in the 66 in Crown Point.
In retrospect and with everyone safe back at home and only an extra 3 hours worth of travel it doesn't seem too bad a return trip. Guess I'll be taking the 2 front tires from the 65 to Crown Point Next week end so I can bring it and the egg tires back home. The 65 won't miss the front tires since it doesn't have an engine in it right now. I think I've also learned that tread isn't the only issue with tires when they get to be 9 years old.
Oh one other thing, I can't wait until next years show in Nashville!
