Just got back from the 26th Annual Indiana Shelby Club Spring Fling in Nashville Indiana. It was an excellent event. There were 160 Mustangs in Friday's Pony Trail from the Brown County Park to the Bedford Indiana Racing Museum and back. Those winding Indiana back roads are a lot of fun for all Mustangs, Cobras, Shelbys and other Ford special interest cars. Jeff Ford, Editor Mustangs and Fords was the host for the Pony Trail. We took a second in class with the Cobra and the 66 GT.

We caravaned down on Thursday with 4 total Mustangs it was a nice just under 5 hour trip. Well our return trip from Nashville today was somewhat longer and eventful! We got to change 3 tires on the 66 and I left it in Crown Point Indiana at my brothers house! Thank goodness we had a small caravan of family on the way home.

Last August I had the belts separate on one of the rear Michelins that were 8 years old but only had 3K miles on them. It was like driving on an egg. I replaced both back tires and figured I would get another season out of the front! Wrong!!

About an hour north of Indy the car started to shake and drive very poorly. We pulled over and I checked the tires and lugs but couldn't really see anything wrong. We got back on the road and the car continued to shake. My Daughter in Law was in the car behind us and she called on the cell and said she could see the passenger side front tire shaking so we pulled over again. This time I could see the separated tread on the tire. We got out the jack that we have never used from under the spare in the 66 and found it didn't like being used. The Jack threads started to strip on the way up and as it let loose once I left skin from my knuckles on the road. On the way down with the car more jack threads stripped. It is toast. We'll need a whole new jack assembly as the ratchet would also not work. Good thing we brought along extra tools. We got the spare on and stopped at the first exit to check the tire pressure and the lug nuts.

Off again on the road after only a total delay of 50 minutes didn't seem bad. After another 1 hour on the road we started to shake again. I was hoping against logic that the spare was out of balance. We pulled over and here we go again! The drivers side tread was visibly separated. Now we have no working 66 jack and no extra spare! How many tires do you need? We drove slowly to the next exit and started to brain storm at the Diesel Mart or something like that Truck Stop. We were 35 to 40 miles from my brother's place in Crown Point Indiana and it is Sunday afternoon. Not many tire places are open and waiting to help at this time. One excellent family suggestion lead to another and the 97 Cobra Jack lifted the car and the little spare from the Cobra also worked on the 66. I have a smart family! We limped to Crown Point, and took the Cobra Spare off the 66 and put one of the eggs back on! We were not leaving the 66 with all the spares after the tire day we had so far. Who knew what lay ahead? We rearranged items in cars, piled all of Karen's and my stuff into the other two cars and left all the not urgent stuff in the 66 in Crown Point.

In retrospect and with everyone safe back at home and only an extra 3 hours worth of travel it doesn't seem too bad a return trip. Guess I'll be taking the 2 front tires from the 65 to Crown Point Next week end so I can bring it and the egg tires back home. The 65 won't miss the front tires since it doesn't have an engine in it right now. I think I've also learned that tread isn't the only issue with tires when they get to be 9 years old.

Oh one other thing, I can't wait until next years show in Nashville!

Sorry to hear about all your trouble. I hope there was no damage to the car!

After looking at your cars I kinda have the bug for a classic now. A friend has a 65 fast back 2+2 with a 289 and automatic. Real clean car with a solid original body. Must have been a west coast car. The paint is good but not original, about 10 years old. If he decides to sell he wants to get at least $14,000 for it. Does that sound like a decent price. The car looks strong all around but I havnt driven it. I'm just keeping my options open.:spinem:

We lucked out on the damage with the tires. Nothing but s****ped knuckles and mental stress. I'll also have to make another run to Crown Point to get the 66 next week end.

The weather was great on Friday for the Pony Trail. I have a sun burned nose that is peeling to prove it. We had 4 Mustangs on Thursday for a good cruise down from Chicago. A 03 Cobra Convertible, our 97 Cobra Convertible, a 84 GT Coupe and the 66 GT Convertible. The weather was overcast but no rain.:allhail:

Saturday was duck city for the show. Some guys keep the classics in the trailers. It stopped raining about noon but it was a wet wet day.

I'll check for pics at home I took some but actually took some great shots of the Lunar Eclipse on Thursday night from the park.

As far as the 65 Fastback the options will have a lot to do with the value. Is it an A Code? AC, PS, Console, what transmission? It sounds like a fair price based on what you listed but if it is a K code it's a great price! I would not buy a classic unless Scott Hamilton at Mustang of Chicago inspected it and appraised it. He is the man.

Se you guys soon. Some Wednesday night will work out to meet!

Here is a Picture of the 97 Cobra in the starting line up for the 160 Mustang Pony Trail in Indiana last week.
Maybe next year we'll have a bigger caravan from Chicago. We had 4 this year.

You did good. Message came through with no problems. I am voting for a wax off! We have a cook out and set up two cars that need cleaned and have Bonny & Rick Murphy go at it. I'll let them use my 65 and 66 for a fair start!

MINERALGSVT, AKA Todd. Thanks for the note. While I was cruising the board early this AM I thought I should drop you a note too but just didn't do it.

We had a great time in Nashville but July is suspect for your event. As of 1 hour ago I am SVT less until the new one comes in. What is the date for the Indy event?

Take care and keep us updated on your car projects.

Several of you asked questions about the Pony Trail at Indiana Saac last month. I'll post two pictures that will give you a good idea of how much fun it was.

I have a work event in Orlando that I have to leave for on Sunday. I am bummed but it is our biggest event of the year so no choice!

Pick up my new Cobra while you are there. It is scheduled to be built on Monday. Send pictures of the trip!

There are a couple of other Spring Fling pics on the Indiana SAAC web site.

Safe travels Todd.
