As much as I dislike the import/ricer/street racing/F&F scene, I still want to check it out. I have no interest in racing, but I would be interested to see what is really like (aside from movies and pop tart commercials.....ya know 'daaaaaaaaaaaaammmmmnn!').

I also think it would be fun to pull up in a (pretty near) stock Cobra and see how they react.

Anyone in the Toronto area involved in 'the scene'? Apparently these guys are real exclusive and don't take kindly to outsiders, so I was hoping that there would be a few others who could help me out....

Go buy a civic, put a big wing on it and some stupid stickers....then they will let you in. Until then, they will ignore you because your car is actually fast :).

I had some twit in a Supra ride next to me for 2 miles last Saturday night in VA looking for a race. I like Supras. They're good cars. I hate pinheads. So sad to see a good car go to waste on a pinhead.:fryem:

In Fairfax Co., VA they confiscate the cars of anyone caught street racing and sell them at auction. (the Northern VA Mustang Club prez is a Fairfax Co. cop). I heard that some areas are going to start arresting spectators (don't recall where I read this - maybe R&T?) because of the surge in popularity caused by The Fast and the Furious.

I have to dissagree....I had a jazzed up civic paceing me this morning on the way to work. I ignored him for a bit, finally looked over and he was giving me this big grin and a thumbs up...I reciprocated.

It made my day.....

I agree with the disagree. I had the same thing happen to me the other day, a ridiculous looking riceburner pulled up next to me and gave me the thumbs up, didn't want anything to do with me.

I agree, SJ Cobra, you have A LOT of Horsepower! how do you keep it on the road!

How do you like the Vortech? How much was it? I really like the Kenne Bell twin screw S/C...

To answer your question, I've only recently completed the summer project (within last 2 weeks). I really like the Vortech set-up, it actually came as a kit. I purchased it from the guys over a t Street Stuff in Addison, the cost for the kit was $5700, if I remember right. They also installed it, and did a great job, by the way. Vortech actually will reburn your chip. The problem I had was I modified my exhaust prior to having the blower installed and Vortech only burns one program for all similar applications, and the first dyno it ran pig rich. My first dyno resulted in only 358rwhp. We then changed from the platinum tip plugs to NGK TR6 and reduced the gap from .040 to .032. Custom chip work was done by JMS Chip and the guys name is Chris Johnson. People all over the country know of this guy. He is an Autologic expert, this was coming from 3 different sources. Also, the kit for 2001 comes with a 3.48 pulley (which produced 8psig). I had a 3.12 pulley installed which bumped the psig to 10. The last dyno showed rwhp at 484 and 411 rwtq. This thing really flies!:jawdrop:

two questions... do you know of any advantage the SC in a '01 has over the S, ive heard that the S-trim put out the best power? it was 5700 for just the vortech 2001 cobra aftercooled kit?

Actually, I've got the SC-trim pkg. just looked at the parts book which comes with the blower kit. One thing I did do was went down from the included 3.48 pulley to the 3.125 pulley to get the 10psig. I'm real happy with my kit. Actually, my car is on it's way to Sean Hyland to get the 575 longblock installed.:D

The 5700 was kit price for blower and aftercooler!;)

Never underestimate the import. I am working on a Hatch right now. I am going with a GSR turbo combo that when I am done will bring this Civic right in with my 99 cobra on NOS. I expect high elevens with slicks when I am finished. The whole combo will cost me less than the cost of my Cobra as well. I am trying to sell the Cobra but I did pay 19,500 for it Dec of 1999. I borrowed my firends car. He has the same combo I am doing. There is nothing like running an 11.98 at the track next to a full blown domestic. Then again there isn't anything like taking out a turbo SI in the obra either at the track.

As far as the street racing scene. Get to know the hang out spots first. Then try to hang around the groups before they leave to the sacred spot. Don't follow the first couple times. then the third or fourth time they should give you an invite. I have been to more than my share of the events. Here in Washington State you can be arrested and face a street racing charge if you watch the event and not call the cops.

Heres my problem with civics. Would you rather have a cool mustang or a cool civic. You have to remember... a civic is still a civic. Civic = economy, Mustang = Muscle. There was some guy that had a neon that did 11's. The only problem is that it was a NEON not some cool muscle car. I know this is my opinion but hey if i had it my way, I would have a crown vic that did the quarter that quick. It would be sweet :).

You should admit that if you got beat by a stock looking ( I mean the stuff. Not the big wing and body kits) Civic really bad your jaw would not hit the floor board. I have love the look on the face of a muscle car guy as the civic pulls right on by. There is beauty in it. The same goes when someone has put some money into an import and wonders why he didn't smoke the Cobra. Both sides are fun. That is why I am chosing to build both. That is also why I have kept the outside of the Cobra stock.

yeah mine has the S-Trim, supposedly it makes more boost in the engines powerband. around 10.5 pounds right now. i got my kit at a discount because they installed it. the 575 longblock sounds pretty awesome, i havn't heard anyones experiences with SHM, please post on the quality and service they provide.

Well I definitely dont want to be smoked by a civic, but doesnt it take a lot of money to make a civic fast? Civics were made for gas mileage not speed. Why dont people just buy an early 90's 5.0 and make it fast (since they were made to go fast unlike civics). I'd rather drive a 11 sec 5.0 then a civic....

BUG

The recipe to make a 5.0 eater out of a civic.

Car- 2500-3000
motor and tranny installed 3000
Turbo installed 3500
clutch and joints 1200

This base line will give an easy 12.2 or so. Add some slicks and bang 11's. It is just that simple.

You will need about another 3000 to buy better components to handle the power about 6 months later and then you will be good to go.

Chris

Cost of a 5.0. A good low mile 93 in my area is 7500. Supercharger install 4200
Gear install 400
New tranny 1200.

About the same cost and you probally won't make it to the low twelves in the 5.0

Power to weight ratio in a Civic is just cool. Take a CRX and throw in a B16 for 2000 installed and run 13.7 all day long.

wals9331
11-14-2002, 01:03 PM
I was thinking more along the lines of rebuilding the engine completely on the 5.0. Not worrying about high miles. New tranny, gears, and nitrous. That would be fairly cheap i think....expecially if u bought some 4 cylinder rusty mustang and dropped the 5.0 into her :). The rustier the better (weight reduction :).

Ive never actually met anybody that has a fast import. They might think they are but they arent. Ive seen my friend smoke a turboed eclipse with his achieva. That was fairly amusing. Of course we heard the, "oh my turbo didnt kick in" **** :).

If you have a civic that runs 11's with no outside body changes thats pretty cool....i really dont like the body kits and no mods to the engine. Thats just lame. Sleeper mode is great.

When I first bought my Cobra my driving skills sucked. I was beat by my first turbo import. Then I improved and showed him just what a Cobra's bite can do. However that is when I got into the import scene. I like sleeper mode. It gives the guy next to you the what the heck look.:jawdrop: I have kept the Cobra like that and plan to keep the Civic the same way. I too hate it when a car has some huge ungodly body kit and runs 15's. To me it is a waste.

I dunno... Volvo's are pretty darn heavy

SVTbooker
11-20-2002, 03:11 PM
They are really heavy, but who on earth would expect an old beater Volvo to be quick of the line. It probably does 0-60mph in 6ish seconds and likely a sub 15sec Quarter mile. You won't be racing porsches but that is pretty damn good for a 89 Volvo wagon and you will certianly surprise more then a few folks.

I think it is cool :bna

:bash: :bash: The street racing scene with the imports is going to get really bad in South Florida soon. They are closing 595 @ 75 in Broward County tomorrow for 5 to 7 days to film the Fast and Furious 2. The local kids are out in force. Several really riced out imports have given me the ^5 and a big grin when I am out in the R. For some reason the kids also like the Lightnings, probably been beat BAD by that truck.

The other night an 18 year old kid was killed in Montgomery County when the Mitsubishi Lancer he was riding in hit a tree while street racing. The driver in in serious condition.

This seems to be getting worse around here.

Last week a kid down here got sentenced to 10 years for killing 3 people in his car when he was dragracing. Another "adult" of 25 years was racing his motorcycle at 3:30 in the morning and ran into the back of a rather large truck at 150+, needless to say there was not a lot left of him. If I get on any of my cars on the street it is just into 2nd gear and that is it. I see people, not just kids, driving way too fast for the traffic like they are impressing us. Thank God Florida doesn't let me carry a gun.

Don't know the technical end at all but the V70 T5 is a turbo and the Motronic performance chip advertised (at one time) 45hp gain w/said chip...doesn't mean that it actually GETS 45hp....now if my memory is fuzzy it could have been they claimed that the chip and a performance exhaust would make 45+. I was aiming for about 300hp and wanted to keep a volvo wagon...

if you are curious....

Turbo Volvos are absolutely bulletproof, and the turbo five in the V70 can be boosted significantly more than the 45 hp with the IPD (manufactured by TME in Sweden) chip.

I have an 01 Cobra with the S-Trim and aftercooler. I also have a 3.12 pulley and a AFM power pipe. I am still in the middle of tuning it in but it produced 406h.p. and 415.8 Torque at only 4800 rpm's. This was when I started to get belt slippage, Couldn't get the full numbers.

Now at 4800 I was already producing 10psi. I'm not sure if the power pipe made that much difference in upping the boost compared to other guy's here.:wtf:

Here's a short video of the dyno pull to 4800. http://pocketbike.com/razor/cobraonthedyno.wmv
