I'm not a '93 owner, but I have a question for you..

I was told that the '93 Cobra springs were the same as the 4cyl..
Is this correct?

I have an '89 LX 5.0 that needs new springs.. I was looking at the '93 Cobra springs...

Do you know if the ride height is lower/same as a Fox GT?

Thanks!

Yes and it's not just because I don't want to contradict myself (I was the one who responded to your post on Stangnet).

I knew the suspension changes for the 93 Cobra were from existing Ford parts stock but I got the specifics from Al Kirschenbaum's 1979 - 1993 V8 Mustang Specifications Guide. Footnote 4 in the 1979 - 93 Mustang Rear Suspension Systems section, "Constant-rate rear springs are used in the 1993 Cobra model and in 2.3 liter Mustangs equipped with the base suspension only." The accompanying chart shows the 160 lb./in. spring rate.

I do not know for sure about your ride height question however, I have never heard or read about the ride height of a 93 Cobra as being "lowered" from the factory. To me, it looks the same as any other 93 GT I see as far as ride height.

Here is a side shot of mine;

HOPETO,

An 03 and a 93, nice combo. I was at an AX event this last weekend and had my 93 there. After the timed runs were over, a friend took me for a lap in his 03. Holy crap! What a difference.

How many miles on the 93? Pics?

Thanks for stopping by.

HOPETO

Absolute day and night difference both in straight line and hanging the curves between the 93 and 03. Its fun to appreciate their differences, just don't forget which one your in if you're going to pick on soneone!! The 93 has less than 8000 miles (not a typo - 8 thousand). I've loaded a picture of all 4 of my cars in the picture gallery - click on the link under my name. Nice pic of your 93 - I'm rather fond of red! :allhail:

BlueOvalBolt

Very nice stable you have there (and the house isn't too shabby either!) Is that 93 vert one of the 1,500 speciial limited editions that came out? Very nice but looks out of place with all the red surrounding it. LOL

Less than 8K, you have more will power than I. I have 51,000 on mine.

HOPETO
10-30-2002, 03:42 PM
BlueOvalBolt, I wouldn't call 51,000 worn out. Yes, the 93 is one of the LE Canary Yellows. It has around 60,000 miles on it. I put the Banshee Ram Air on it a couple of months ago. I was a little nervous cutting the hole in that hood.

BlueOvalBolt
11-01-2002, 08:30 AM
You have more guts than I to cut a hole in the hood like that. Is that Banshee deal like the shaker hood on the new Mach I's? How much of a difference do think it makes for power?

Welcome to the boards, Steve. Looks like we're starting a trend with all these Performance Red cars. Nice combo with the Lightning!! - BlueOvalBolt, The Banshee shaker kit is very similar to what you'll be seeing on the new Mach I . Its 99.9% visual impact and .1% performance gain. Its really cool to watch the scoop "shake", but it reroutes the air entering the scoop over to a new air filter box located in the stock location thru a K&N filter and then on to the MAF. No real horsepower gains, but I love the way it looks!! Later, Jimmy

HOPETO - Looks like you did an excellent installation job. I'll bet that shaker is cool to watch when you hit the go pedal.

Rickety - Nice combo. I really like what each has to offer. When I traded my 99 L in for the 01, I almost went with white but got the red. Just couldn't do it. Every time I see one though (which isn't often) I kinda wish I did. Any mods to the Cobra or L?

Rickety

Lots of Mods...Too many to list. Looking for a 9.99 ET next year with the Cobra, and 12.50's for the Lightning....

Wow, 9's in a 93 Cobra, I guess you do have a few mods done. I'm still waddling around in the high 13's with the Cobra although I hit 13.5 a few years back.

I did 12.80@107 with the L a few weeks back, 12.5 is the next goal as well.

Good luck on hitting both.

Greetings another 93 owner here. My car has a lot more mileage then the rest here I am sure. As of right now I am just a few miles over 158k on the original motor except for the cam.

On another note..In regards to the post above about springs. The fronts are unique to the 93 cobra and you can tell if you have a GT/LX sit next to it. The front of a cobra sits about 1/2 inch lower than the 5.0 brothers

Not true on the front springs...They are Standard 5.0(E5ZZ-5310-J).....The rears are different(D9BZ-5560-M).......The Front struts(F3ZZ-18124-A) and the Rear shocks(F3ZZ-18125-A) are cobra specific..... The Front Anti sway bar(F3ZZ-5482-A) is cobra specific also...

No not really. Just a 100 shot of juice:D

Actually that time was made before my cam install and custom tuned chip.

Going to the track first of December (armed with slicks I hope)
Hoping to get a 12.2-12.3 on juice. Might even throw in the 150 jets and go for 12.0's..Nitrous, cam, 3.73's, and exhaust is all the car has. Nothing else has been removed or changed during its life.
My car is a show car, strip car, and my daily driver. Yes I use it for what it was designed for. (Haven't had a chance to open track yet though)

Rickety-
I stand corrected..Looked in a book after reading your response above(Modern Mustangs, Twenty Years of 5.0 Muscle). I couldn't find my SVT Cobra Recognition Guide (still unpacking from moving last month) Anyhow according to it you are correct. It states the samething about the springs.:allhail:

Welcome aboard Lee, glad you found us.

Rickety,
Great work, I knew about the springs but did not have the info on the struts and shocks. Where did you find that?

93Cobra2771
11-12-2002, 01:21 PM
Cobra #2771 here.

Good luck on finding a set of the stock 93 Cobra struts and shocks. I checked a while back (my front left is going bad) and the going price was $500 and up. I said no thanks, and got a set of Tokico 5 way adjustables. By the way, I have it from several reputable sources (including Steeda) that Tokico was the OEM supplier for the 93 Cobra struts and shocks. Tokico does offer a non-adjustable model that I have a feeling is close to the OEM offering.

I had always heard rumors that the rears were 4 cylinder springs, but I thought the fronts were different from GT's as well. I think the general philosophy at that time was to tune the suspension like they did in Europe - softer springs but stiffer struts and shocks. I could be wrong on this point, just pulling this from my memory. That also goes along with the smaller sway bar.

Heres a pic of mine:

Welcome Mark. Great cars.

I have AX'd at GingerMan, very nice track. I've heard they are making a few changes to make it more AX friendly.

(EDIT) I didn't see your post in my gallery but that was taken at an AX event on Labor Day weekend at a Midwestern Council Sports Car Clubs AX. (I'm a member of the Great Lakes Sport Car Club). There was a professional photogragher there who took about 20 pics of everyone running and sold CD's for $20. He did a great job. From the looks of your picture, I thought he may have been at your event. Who took that one? I missed your event last May/June(?) but am going to try to get there this coming year. (EDIT)

Is the metal around the lower radiator opening on your R for reinforcement or have you altered the original R oil cooler?

93svtcobra
11-19-2002, 02:40 AM
The photo was taken by a guy named Mitch from the Detroit area. $20 for a CD full of pictures....VERY good deal!

The metal piece is actually to stop rocks from breaking the oil cooler. The previous owner had a problem with that and the metal screen was the solution. Also makes it very easy to determine which car is mine!!

We have Gingerman scheduled for 6/12 which is the Thursday before the SVT Experience. Would make for a nice stop on your way to Detroit!

BlueOvalBolt
11-19-2002, 05:02 AM
It must have been the same guy that took my pictures, I agree, it was a great deal.

I've always wanted to put an R oil cooler and power steering cooler on the car, do you know if they are available anywhere?

A weekday is kinda rough for me to get to an event (not planning on going to the Experience) but we'll see what happens. An SVT event at GingerMan is worth the effort.

93svtcobra
11-19-2002, 06:08 AM
You can buy the oil cooler out of the Ford Motorsport catalog but the brackets are unavailable. I am looking at working with someone to get some brackets made up. The PS cooler is available from www.mustangparts.com which is PPI.

We tried to get a weekend day at Gingerman but unfortunately the SCCA's 5-10 track days takes priority over us.

BlueOvalBolt
11-20-2002, 01:25 PM
If you happen to make an extra set of brackets for the oil cooler, let me know, I'd take them off your hands ;) (Now why would they sell an oil cooler for which brackets are unavailable?)

I'm sure weekend dates are at a premium at GingerMan and am putting the 12th on the calendar. It's just going to take some planning.

Hey everyone, nice cars(and trucks) all around. 93 Cobra owner here with 32,000 miles on the clock. Just made the leap into some major mods. I purchases an S-trim w/Aftercooler and will be adding 42# injectors, 75MM MAF, and a highflow pump. Can you guys tell me if stock 93 valve covers are discontinued and if the 93 oil pan is different from the non SVT models. I'll be damaging both of these with the blower install.

Welcome aboard 93CBRA! I believe I have 32,000 miles on my 93 Cobra as well.

The oil pan is the same as a regular 5.0L and the valve covers are unique and probably discontinued so I would probably replace them with a different set or else buy some different covers altogether.

VENOM S, I had a 99.5 Contour that I had a lot of problems with. It was in the shop every other week. How's your Focus? Pretty cool car, how do you like it? Have you raced it in any SOLO events yet?

Well, I just got the Focus a month or so ago so I haven't had a chance to race it yet. My wife plans on racing it next year but it's a really big class here in Detroit. We'll see how she does. I expect her times to be way faster than mine in the Cobra.

I just finish putting Mac springs, headers, h-pipe, mufflers, under drive pullyes, 70mm throttle, and cold air intake. Also put a pro 5.0 shifter, intake spacer, and 9mm wires. The Lighting is all stock, well not for long! Come on lets hear it for the original SVT's!!!!!!
Not that I wouldn't take a '03 Cobra or Lighting if I had the money!!

I might as well put it my$.02.

I am the proud owner of #58 1993 Cobra R with about 5500 miles. I am the third owner and bought it with 2200 on the clock back in 1995. Since then %95 of those added miles have been on track at speed. While the engine has a stock short block it does have a ported intake, alum. heads (GT40X), and long tube headers the suspension have been completely gone through with most of the stock parts replaced with aftermarket or custom fabricated parts. I think the rear axle and the Koni DA shocks are all I am using.

Slowly adding suspension/brake item to it. Still want to keeep as original as possible. The '93's are the best handling Cobra's out there as they are also the lightest as weight is the enemy.

Yeah, I drove the Cobra up on Sunday just to watch. I got to Road America about 11 and left about 2. Sorry I didn't see you. Mike was there and donated SVTOA caps and Raceway Directories to the Northwoods guys for extra door prizes and giveaways. Terry, Marv, Mark, and Jim also showed up as spectators. Bill in his Gen I L and Bruce in his 00 R ran the AX Saturday and Bruce also ran Sunday. Not as many of us ran this year, I think Gingerman took a toll on our track time budgets this year.

Did you drive your Cobra there? I saw 3 93's running in the event.

No, actually the Cobra stayed at home. Rear main is leaking a little more than I like. We brought my friend's mustang instead. It's a Saleen clone with a little different exhaust note (built v6). We got there at around 12:30 and stayed until 5:00.

BlueOvalBolt - I own 93 Cobra R #67. 3400 miles, and all on the track. Car is currently on display at Lane Automotive in Waterveliet, MI. Exit 41 on I-94 close to Benton Harbor. See my just added thread under the 93,95,00 Cobra R catagory.

I will have the car at the Gingerman SVTOA track event in July and plan to make this year's Northwood's Road America event. We actually had FTD in 1994 with the car at that event. Promote Saturday road trip in May for the Milwaukee club and I will get a tour of Lane set up for you.

Great car! Mike sent me your email about a tour of Lane. We have a meeting on Wednesday night and will gauge interest there.

Thanks for the invite.

I just wondered if you received any interest in making a road trip to Lane Automotive in Waterviliet, MI before May 26? I think if your club had a few willing to make the trip that some would join you from Michigan. I have approached Mark Wilson with the same offer but have not heard back from him either.

If you are interested Lane would provide a great tour and I am sure offer up some door prizes of some sort to be drawn.

I arranged for the West Michigan Mustang club to tour a few years back and they had a blast!

Let me know.
