I don't know that rear axle breakage is an inherent problem with the 99-01s. They do break, especially if you're launching hard with slicks at the track. If you have any info, re: a widespread problem, I'm really interested to learn about it.
GKN, I believe, has made all of the halfshafts for the factory IRS cars including the R and 03--much stronger that what we have, indeed. Check out this link...http://www.need-4-speed.com/gkn.htm
It ain't cheap, obviously. I would guess you could get a better deal on 03 shafts from a good high-performance dealer like GEF Racing. Fyi, John Coletti of SVT mandated that the 03 IRS had to be strong enough to endure a minimum of 500 track launches without breakage. I don't recall the specifics (magazine, etc...someone else probably will be able to help), but they stopped testing at way over 500 with everything intact.
