Has anyone noticed rust forming on brake discs? I live in a beach town. All 4 discs have some rust around the outer edge. Is this normal?

I bought my cobra in October and all 4 brakes had rust on them. Most of it has worn off. I notice if I don't drive it in a few days they start to rust again, but goes away after a few high speed passes through the country roads.

Same with me, after washing about 10 minutes later there is rust on the rotors:rant: That will change when I get those eradispeed rotors:spinem: I also bought my Cobra in October..Hmmmm could be the batch of rotors....

Mine rust too, after washing. I though that it was the wheel cleaner that I use, but I ran out and it still happens. Cast irin rusts. Have you noticed the centers of the front rotor are painted and the rears are not. They should have painted the rears to match the fronts. I realize that the fronts aftermarket(not made by Ford) but attention to detail guys. I will have to do it myself I guess.:bash:

hey guys, every brake roter on any car will rust, its not just your cars. i have 99 cobra, so its not a bad batch. all it is- is unprotected metal, so when they get wet for any period of time they will start to oxidate. if there is a little rust on them just ride the brakes down your driveway and it will be gone. just remember, every roter on any car does this.

so dont feel like your car is any less of a car because of this.

I don't think any less of this ride for a liitle rust on the brakes, I just wish they would have painted the rear rotors to match the fronts. The brakes on this car make me appreciate the seat belts in this thing! They do a good job of keeping your nose off of the windshild when agressively using them. They are by far the best brakes on any car that I have ever had the pleasure of driving!:tmb:

Mine are rusty on the iner edge as well. and they are starting to squeal again. Last time they just machined the rotors (glazed) and sanded clean the pads, I'll tell them to replace the pads this time.

Yeah, normal.

I too wish they painted the centers on the rears. I painted them myself, but rust re-appeared at the edge where the brake pad and the paint meet.

My brake rotors are rusty also. The other day I tried to back out of my garage and the rear brakes (emergency brake) must have stuck because I had to pop them loose to get it to start rolling. I looked twice to be sure the Emergency brake was off. When it finally released there was a slight pop. This has happened a few times. Also the front brakes squeel when applying slight pressure, kind of embarrassing. Maybe if I clean them off good by breaking real hard they will stop.

Yeah, the squeal is another thing. I've found that my brakes squeal after the roters get wet (washing, rain, etc). If I drive it in dry weather for a couple of weeks, it goes away but generally I wash the car about that often so I figure I'll have to just deal with it. Considering all the brake dust these pads produce, I'm expecting I'll have to replace them before too long and I may go with a ceramic or something to see how that does.

I hate seeing rust on anything.... so as soon as I can, I replace the rotors with either cadmium plated or zinc washed.... both won't rust for a long long time, especially if you bed your brakes properly

I've seen some new model Porsches also with the same problem. Must be the brake pads, they're pro'bly cheap ones. Anybody knows who makes the pads? A better replacement is in place, they make too much dust on the wheels, and have to clean them constantly, hope they dont have asbestos :(

The bare metal will always rust due to oxidation. If you were to let your car sit for a week or so you'd see rust build up on the entire rotor.

All steel will rust. Disk brake surfaces are machined after they have been tempered. A smooth or polished finish will get surface rust faster than a piece of flat steel not much faster but faster and tempered steel seems to be the fastest. I've never tried to prove this so no science involved here just observation.

mine rust too on my SVTf. if i dont drive it when it rains or snows, and it sits for a day or 2, i come out to nice rusted rotors.
