View Full Version : How are you stopping wheel hop?

Ok, we all know that a hard lauch in a stock '03 will cause wheel hop. Now many of us are modifying our Cobras to get even more power, along with more wheel hop!
My question: How are you modified owners controlling wheel hop? No, you can't say put in a straight axle! I want my IRS to stay planted!

I had horrendous wheel hop as well on my ‘03. From discussions on this forum, it seems like bushing, shocks and lowering the rear-end (spring reduction) are the answers. Today, I finally got around to replacing the stock bushings with polyurethane bushings. I can HIGHLY recommend this fix to you. I have not done either the shock or spring remedy as yet but bushings will be a major help and at $39 dollars a cheap remedy. Once I removed the stock bushings I could see that they were pretty beat up and the rubber section that goes into the differential (between the outer bushings) was deformed. All the stock bushings had stress lines all over them.
Once the new bushings were in, for the first time in about 5 months I could smoke the tires with NO wheel hop. Sweet! Since adding horsepower it was finally nice to see the power turn the tires like they were on butter rather than shake the fillings from my teeth.
Changing the bushings takes a while however. I had to remove the exhaust and cross-brace and the cross-brace is bolted on real tight. Also make sure you get the right kit. The stock bushings are slightly angled. So if your kit comes with bushings with 90 degree edges it probably not the right one.
Hope this helps.

This question will most certainly show my status as an amatuer, but I'll deal with it I guess.
What exactly is wheel hop??
And please be gentle with the teasing. You guys were new once too. :p

Wheel hop... tires spin (loose traction)... alternately get traction then loose it... oscilations in tire wall.... vibrations in rear housing support structure... springs, shocks etc.
I don't see how there is one single system cure for this. I see it in the compromise for ride smoothness along with IRS geometry add up to inablility to reduce oscilation...
For me, I am going to wait for a few months and see what finally comes out... meaning develops in the way of improved components before I spend serious money....

I would assume that temperature would have some affect on wheel hop, so I am also waiting, for warmer weather to see how bad it is and in turn more time for other options.
