CarFax is available for Canadians too ;) It is an online service that you can use to check the history of any vehicle given the VIN. As you can see it doesnt always work. It is still a good thing to use when buying a car/truck.

Something to keep in mind with carfax, check the VIN at a dealership. They can tell you virtually the same info, and in greater detail. A friend ran a carfax on a car he bought, came back with a clean title. When he took it into a dealership for maintenance after purchase, it came thru as a salvage title. It's best to check both places.

Those VIN checks only go by what is reported to either Police or Insurance companies. No reports, no info, clean title. Don't rely on Carfax or the dealer for that matter. Always check for yourself.

When purchasing from a dealer, ask to contact the previous owner to see if there are any problems. Some states have laws requiring dealer to provide previous owners name and address if asked. If the car is on a lot, he shouldn't have anything to hide! Carfax is only as good as information it is given.

We bought ours from a carfax dealer who showed us some copies of all the title transfers and nowhere did it say it had been wrecked . Buyer beware.

Uh hey there...Car-Fax dosen't know JACK!!!
I have checked my old vin#'s and believe me they don't report any of the damage I had repaired. I signed up before shopping right when they came out but I soon learned that it would take every Ins. company to promptly report to them any repairs etc. so they could alert you. They don't, at least they haven't been able to tell on anything I've traded in the last 6 years. 3 cars, 1 bad hit and to this day (11-02 was the last time I checked on my 97 Tahoe and 93 Crown Vic) they report nothing. You don't want my 97 Tahoe, and that's why I keep looking cause I thought people would be able to see, but nothing has ever come up.
Bad deal, I wouldn't trust it.
