Can people use pictures of my car to advertise without my permission???

and what if someone creates a website, using pics off my website of my car, claiming it's theirs???

Are the pics not copyrighted?

Both of the above are happening to me.

When you post pictures of your car on the web, they pretty much become part of the public domain, unless you go to the trouble and expense of obtaining copyrights. Even so, many folks will use them anyways, and then it's up to you or your lawyer(s) to go after them.

What many people do is embed text in the photos or watermarks to identify them. Placing a text line under your car can help, but it is so easy to modify photos with programs like photoshop that it's almost useless to try and stop them.

There are a few things you can do- for example, my webserver has the ability to disable remote linking of images- this means if someone references your images on another website, the image will not display- in place will be a GIF image that says "Remote Linking of images not permitted"
I also can tell if our images are being used on other sites via the control panel, as can Ford. If the image is copied and then uploaded to a different server, this will remove my ability to trace.
However, if the image filename has not been changed, you can often easily locate your images with a search engine.
Type the filename in the search box- for example, if you have an image called "vanessasvt.jpg" go to google.com and type in vanessasvt.jpg in the search box. You might be suprised, as some folks don't even bother to change the filename!!
The problem there is you might get back 10,000 results.

If you can post on a site where your images are being used, speak up! You can post something like "I'm flattered that you think enough of my car to use the images of my baby, but it would have been nice of you to ask!"

well I don't really mind them using it, but it would have been nice if they told me.

As for the putz with the website, claiming my car BELONGS TO HIM, well that's another story, and he took it down after I ripped into him.

Contact Todd Holzwarth of Discount Tire at 888-459-4080 Extension # 414 and let him know how you feel Van. I think you may have no claim whatsoever, but it might be worth a try. All that may come of it, is they will say "Ok, remove her car and post a different car" Tell them they can use mine if they want!!! I'm a poster boy for burning off rubber!!

Look at it this way- you can be flattered that they think enough of your paint job to use your car in their advertising... :D

Added: Make lemonade out of lemons! You can now claim that your car has been used in National Advertising! :D :D

no like I said.... I don't really care.... I was just surprised. I didn't know you could just do that.

I even buy tires from them, so they could have asked me. I would have said yes anyways.

Besides I have much better pics than that one LOL!!!

Actually in canada, copyrights are automaticvally assigned... you can pay to register them if you wish(easier legal battles) but if you do not and can prove that the item in question is in fact yours the copyright is then assumed and will be 50 years after your death... Me and my band went through this last year so it is still kinda fresh in my head

I had the pleasure of Dallas Mustang spotting my car and asking to take a picture of it for their latest catelog. I have a silver 03 Cobra and had replaced the stock wing with a Ford R Wing.

I was thrilled and enjoyed showing it off. I had friends that said I should have charged them a fee, but I disagree. I did get a free tee shirt from Dallas Mustang. They took the catelog cover and silkscreened the picture on tee shirts.

My car isn't as unique as yours is SVTGirl, but I am on the look out for a good shop in Dallas to do some trick paintwork so my car would be a stand alone. Others have started to mount the R wing on their 03 Cobra's.

I have busted my front bumper now for the second time and like the Stalker bumper you have on your car.

that's sweet!! Although I no longer have the R wing, I still love it, and the stalker bumper is also no more, I went with the R bumper instead, although I think there is still a pic on my website with the stalker bumper, I liked it ;)

If it isn't a bother, how much did your trick paint job set you back? I would like a unique image beyond just the wing, bumper, and hood.

Your car is sure a looker

Yep, I have seen some pics of my car on a couple of websites. I just shot em an e-mail asking if they might put a link to my site or mention who the car belongs to and they did. No big deal, I took it as a compliment.
