im currently running my engine on mobil 1 synthetic 5w-30. i am thinking about going up to 10w30 or even 15w30. one of my buddy's at work, who is a certified ford mechanic, and who has a 89 mustang gt which runs with about 700 hp (edelbrock heads-modified, custom intake, 15 lb ati supercharger, etc.), he said that i should put thicker oil because of it being synthetic. what do you guys think? what do you use? thanks

Been using Amsoil for 24 years & never had a problem. Amsoil has everything from a 0W-20 to Racing Oils at a much higher rating.
Check out their website: www.amsoil.com
That will give all the needed info. on the different weight oils.

... and is still the best. I have used Amsoil in my vehicles since 1982 and will again in my SVT Focus once I get the miles on it. I figure between 6 and 10 thousand miles before making the change. Amsoil makes a 0W-30 oil that I may use. Your mechanic sounds like he doesn't know what he is talking about telling you to change to a thicker oil because it is synthetic. I'd think twice about going thicker or read some informative oil articles like this one:

Why do you need to put miles on a car before switching to a synthetic oil?
Thanks,
Steve

Everyone has a answer to that & most are different. I wait till about 1000 - 1250 to put in Amsoil. Also put in a new Amsoil Oil Filter. I want the engine to have a little wear in period & also to flush out any metal particles, if any are there.
Never had a problem with 5 new cars I have owned over a 24 year period. On 1 of them I put it in after 500 miles too. I also wait the 1000 miles in case the engine has a problem from the factory. If the Dealer finds out u put in Synthetic guess who they try to blame? If the engine runs 1000 miles & no problem best bet is its AOK. Now this is my opinion & just like a a**hole everyone has one. Just watch!
