How does one know if there is a broken or cracked catalytic converter mounting bracket?
FORD: 2002-2004 Focus
ISSUE:
Some 2002-2004 Focus SVT vehicles may exhibit a broken or cracked catalytic converter mounting bracket.
ACTION:
Replace the catalytic converter mounting bracket.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
Remove two (2) M8x16 bolts from engine side of catalytic converter mounting bracket (Figure 1).
Remove two (2) M8x25 bolts from catalytic converter side of catalytic converter mounting bracket (Figure 1).
NOTE: DO NOT REMOVE THE "ENGINE" BRACKET.
Remove catalytic converter mounting bracket.
Install new catalytic converter mounting bracket.
NOTE: IT IS CRITICAL THAT THE BOLTS AT THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER SIDE OF THE MOUNTING BRACKET ARE TORQUED FIRST. FAILURE TO DO THIS MAY RESULT IN BRACKET FAILURE.
Install two (2) M8x25 bolts at catalytic converter side of catalytic converter mounting bracket. Torque the bolts to 168-186 lb-in (19-21 N-m).
Install two (2) M8x16 bolts at the engine side of catalytic converter mounting bracket. Torque bolts to 168-186 lb-in (19-21 N-m).
