I have only seen one other post on this on SVTP but I discovered that my rear driver side brake is sticking I believe. I took the car to the dealer and was told I was out of warranty now and that brakes are a consumable like oil and gas and had to fix it :barfy: . My question is that I shouldn't have to be replacing brakes this early on a street car. Only 28k on the ticker and only the driverside is worn down to metal on metal. All the othe pads and brakes are fine this makes no sense. The front should wear before the rear and I have never had to do brakes on a car at 30k. Anyone else experiance this? And what is the fix? New caliper? Can you rebuild the caliper?

Thanks for your help,
Brian

Yes you can rebuild you caliper. It is possible for the brake pads not to release as they should. I have had problems with pads not on quite right and wearing out fast, not on my Cobra but on my old Lightning. You should be able to do the work yourself.

Thanks for the info beerkat. Can you give me some pointers on how to rebuild the caliper or direct me to a web page possibly? Or would you suggest talking to the auto part store?

Leave the rebuild to qualified technicians, the cost is minimal and you are safe. Also a thought if you do On-track or lapping days with friends ask if they have a high heat resistant seal. Plus do them as a pair I have seen it that a few months later the other side did the same thing.

I would check with NAPA or one of the other local parts store to see what rebuild kit they can get you. Being that you are doing a rear brake caliper I do not think that you need to worry about high temp seals. You might want to see what the cost of a new caliper is before you decide to rebuild you old one.

I would agree with GaborVincer on doing both of them if you had worn them out. But you seem to have one that is defective.

Have you taken off the caliper and looked at it to see what might be the problem? It may not need rebuilding just some attention. You will need a special tool to collapse the piston but you can get it at the parts store and they do not cost much.

Get yourself a shop manual for the 03 Mustang they have the same rear brakes as the Cobra. Haynes or Chilton will work well and you will be surprised at how much information in the Mustang manual will apply to your Cobra.

My e-mail is beerkat@sc.rr.com I might be able to send you some more information if you can not fine what you need in one of the above manuals.

I will check to see what a rebuild kit will cost. I have found rear calipers for $109 ea. So buying a new caliper my be cheaper...I have checked both calipers and only the driver rear is worn down the passenger side still has 1/4" of pad left that is why I posted to see if anyone else has had this problem.
So I ordered new ceramic brake pads and rotors from performancecenter.com. They had a great price on cross drilled rotors and Hawk brake pads so I'm waiting for them to arrive then I can tear into it this weekend. Does a repair manual exsist for our car? I can look for a mustang manual but if I'm forking out the money would like to get one on our car :)
Thanks again Beerkat if I can't find what I need I will give you a shout.

Here is a link to Helm. They publish Ford shop manuals for the dealers.

You can get the manual on CD and it does cover the Cobra.
