Ford Shelby GT500 officially rated at 500 horsepower, 25 horsepower higher than preliminary estimates.

The Shelby GT500 will go on sale this summer with more horsepower than any previous factory-built Mustang

DEARBORN, Mich., May 2, 2006: - The most powerful factory-built Mustang ever just got even more potent. Final certification testing of the Shelby GT500’s 5.4-liter supercharged V-8 shows it will produce 500 horsepower and 480 lb.-ft. of torque – 25 more horsepower than preliminary estimates.

“With 500 hp and the Shelby name, this car is an instant legend," said Hau Thai-Tang, director, Advanced Product Creation & SVT programs. "This is the most powerful, most capable Mustang ever."

The Ford Shelby GT500's supercharged 5.4-liter, 32-valve V-8 is a result of Ford's experience in developing the modular V-8 and V-10 engine series. The engine is force-fed air via a "Roots-type" supercharger providing 9 pounds per square inch of boost. It borrows the four-valve cylinder heads, piston rings and bearings, from the Ford GT engine.

The 500 hp rating was obtained using the Society of Automotive Engineer's latest standard and was witnessed by an objective third party. The Shelby GT500's 5.4-liter supercharged V-8 will be built at Ford's Romeo Engine Plant in Romeo, Mich. Pricing will be announced closer to launch.

The right to purchase the first 2007 Ford Shelby GT500 was auctioned for $600,000, with the proceeds benefiting the Carroll Shelby Children's Foundation. The 2007 Ford Shelby GT500 goes on sale this summer.

it still better be underrated. The great thing about he current cobra is that it was underrated and that helped sell them cause people felt like the were getting free power.

its a shame that most of these cars wont even see the full 500 used cause they are going to be bought up by collectors and stashed away.

It's going to be cool. Too bad they didn't put the screw blower on there, though. Well, not for the TS vendors I guess :).

I've said it before, and I'll say it again. If I could afford one, I'd get one. :D

I'm excited for you guys but I'll be honest, I'm disappointed. The car is way too heavy for my tastes. It's a better chassis than mine, more suited to the 'vert, but still too heavy. Add to that a solid axle and now it looks like no twin screw.

The car's a beast. I love it and I can't wait to see it on the road, but it's officially evolved to where I'm just going to wait to see what the future factory tuned cars are going to look like. Hopefully there will be a Boss more oriented towards lower weight and road driving. I'd happily strap a blower on myself :). And the other pony car competitors are just around the corner and that's worth waiting for too.

And what's the 1/4 mile time?

if I had to guess I'd say 11.65. For as much as this thing costs it BETTER be in the 11s.

That's GT territory.

Heavier car, worse weight dist'n, less aero, less HP...
I'm gonna guess low to mid 12's.

Yep, mid 12's, low 12's with a great driver, and that's assuming the "500 hp" is underrated by at least 25 bhp. If it comes out at or below that 500 mark expect a lot more mid 12's :).

No guessing. Facts only.

From 450 to 475 to 500 bhp? No twin screw? I am curious what changes boosted the HP. :mask:
I cannot wait until a non-Ford group or agency does a neutral dyno test on it. Any betts on the TRUE (dynojet) rwhp will be? I am wagering it will be between 410 & 430 rwhp. I would love to "test drive" one of these GT500 Convertibles to compare the feel to my 04 Cobra vert ! :tmb:
Will it be out in 2008 model year? :wtf:

uh, the SAE is a neutral party, thats why the claims were certified. what dyno they use doesnt matter as long as they use the same one consistently.

The type of dyno DOES matter. If 03-04 Cobras were dyno-rated (stock) @ 360 rwhp and the ShelbyGT500 was rated @ 440 rwhp on a Mustang dyno.... you get the point. ;) I want to see a GT500 on a newer model Dynojet (stock) and compared to a stock (if there are any) 03-04 Cobra. Iwould then enjoy seeing the rwhp per pound comparison. A couple of televised runs between vert vs vert and coupe vs coupe would be fun as well!

well, you are assuming they were rated on different dynos. I dont think the SAE is so sloppy that they would do that, otherwise the industry would have no confidence in their certifications. Who would you rather trust, the Society of Automotive Engineers or Bob down at EXTREME SUPER MEGA DYNO!!!...?

My Mystichrome is stock. I would really like to see what it would dyno anyway. I was going to dyno it last year at the Bristol FFW but the dyno guys from Georgia did not show up. I am really interested what my figures are stock. I saw a girl's dyno run on another forum and all she did was put on a cat back exhaust, a CAI, and a tune and put down 416 rwhp. Nothing else done to her car. To me that pretty decent hp to play with.

Horsepower-shmorsepower (Hey, that's a funny word).
They all have enough to have fun with. Hell, my wife's Focus is a blast in the twisties.

I can certainly appreciate this point, and before getting into the business found it great to go 'testdrive'. Now, being on the other side of the desk, I'm glad I've presold all the Shelby's we'll get so I don't have to worry about tire kickers out to 'see what it'll do' just to compare. Don't get me wrong - a test drive for a legitimate buyer is always something we do. It's just a matter of trying to weed out Joe Hotshoe versus Mr Buyer (or something to that effect anyway).

I'm sure the other Sales Consultants on this forum will feel the same.

I'll bet that's something salesmen for everything from Corvettes to Porsches have had to deal with. I know to a small extent it was even a problem with the Terminators. But I can see how it would be worse with a GT500.
