View Full Version : Saleen or GT500?

At the risk of getting shouted off the SVT board asking about a Saleen, I will ask anyway. I currently have an 03 convertible and really like the new body style. I know the first run of 07 GT500's will be way overpriced and was thinking about buying a supercharged Saleen convertible.
The horsepower will be close and I know the transmission and engine will be different. Any comments? Thoughts? Warnings?
I do like the way they look, and I could get one for about 55 grand or so, maybe less now that the 500 is coming out.
Thanks

I am not currently aware of the Saleen performance, but going from knowledge of previous comparisons i.e. Saleen/03-04 Cobra I would venture to say wait for the GT 500. If you are looking for exclusivity and you have 55k to drop, then why not the Saleen. It would be my guess though, that you will get more bang for the buck with the GT 500. I wouldn't count on the Saleen dropping in price andy time soon though.

I actually saw a (Saleen S281 Extreme and standard S281 SC) the past weekend from a car show. I sat in it and it was actually nice, but it feels like my '04 Cobra has a little more space inside. It was advertised to have 550 HP and it is a 6 speed, not too bad at all. Made me think for a while but as soon as I went home I looked at my '04 and just couldn't let go....I'd probably just put some more money in it to bring it up to 500-600 HP. :) To keep up with the Zo6's and Saleen...... :) :) :)

This is like choosing a favorite flavor of ice cream. It's all about personal choice. :D
It is all about what you like and can afford. For me I would wait for the G.T 500 to come out, the price to normalize and the first run bugs to be worked out. Remember the 2003 bugs?

Saleen is available NOW, the bugs are out of it now that is on second year.
the resale value is great. Saleen has a lot of racing history.
My brother just got an 06 Sallen 281 SG....he thought of Shelby also, but got tired of price rumors, availablity issues, changes in car... then he added up changes he would do to Shelby, large wheels, lowered that already come on Saleen
Buy Saleen keep for two years, then sell and buy Shelby if you still gotta have one, two years from now a lot can happen in this world
And be warned Saleen dealers could care less about selling them............I think they have same problem SVO had before SVT redeeem the mustang enthuthist

Foose doing production Mustang line? (http://www.uniqueperformance.com/samsclubauction.aspx)
Between the offerings from Roush, Saleen and Foose, Ford needs to pay attention when they go to put a sale price and production numbers out for the GT500.
Don't be trying to offer up a Corvette priced Mustang.
Too many better looking vehicles that everybody won't have like the Roush Stage 2, or Saleen Extreme. Last but not least, Chip Foose enters the fray with a package for 42K. It's only 325 horsepower but it's a headturner still.

Engine tick, driveshaft vib, just to name a couple.
Mine was made after the engine tick was fixed and my vib was a bad balance on the tires from the factory. I still have a leaky tail light (drivers side). It's been replaced 3 times now. My drivers side mirror wiggles like crazy and it's been replaced 3 times now. But I would not trade Her for anything.
Hey Greg if you read this I thought that NJStangFan and I resopnded to this
Question about "What bugs?" but the responce seems to be gone now. What happened???

Actually, IMO, the bugs were with the '02 1/2 Cobras (made on the '02 Mustang assembly line), not the '03's.
I have one of the '02 1/2's and the day I drove it off the lot the vibration was so bad I couldn't see out of the rearview mirror going down the highway.
I've had the IRS replaced and I'm on my 3rd drive-shaft.
I have the "Tick". Had to have the computer reflashed for the Stall Problem. Dash vibration noise, Drifts to the right, etc.

The Foose is a headturner but it is WAY overpriced compared to what is out there. I don't think you will be disappointed with either the Saleen or the GT500. Only issue with the GT5000 will be dealers will be jacking up the prices for them.
Had to have the computer reflashed for the Stall Problem.
Ditto. The reflash was like night and day.

Like Jamie said, this is a personal choice. Which one gets your juices running when you drive it?
What, you haven't driven a GT500 yet. Then not enough data to choose. Have you driven the new Saleen yet? If not, this is all just about which one looks better.
Again, personal choices.

The list price might be 80k, but they aren't selling on Ebay even for 50-60k.

Saleen Extreme is an awesome car,But Will still cost more than the GT500 after its marked up. Last sticker I saw was over 60k.
At the same time you know Saleen is not disappear anytime soon. I would like the GT500 if I could get one at sticker but I would pay no more. I would rather spend that cash and build a track car.

My 03 Vert 10th Anniversary edition is my second SVT. My wife has an 05 Roush. From what I hear about quality and standing behind the warranty from Ford Dealers selling Saleen's I would not buy one. To many other cool options like Steeda and Roush available at better prices. Just an opinion. Saleens are cool looking and come with bigger wheels but it would not be my pick.
Good shopping!

:tmb: Not only are the 03-04 Cobras lass expensive than the other parties mentioned, they are great performers with a large variety of easy and affordable aftermarket improvements available! I had a Mustang 440A and an 2005 Ford Mustang GT Roush pull up along side me on the freeway recently. I had great fun watching them fade into scenery in my rear/side view mirrors! :spank: I have another $3,000.00-$5,000.00 in mods left to do on my 04 Cobra before it is "done." I prefer my 04 Cobra over ANY of the aforementioned (including those in the title) prior to my completion. I will overwhelming prefer my baby to these new kids on the block following my suspension, tires/wheels and custom tuning! :jawdrop:

If anyone is interested in a GT500, send me a private message. I have "accidentally" ordered two of them. I will be looking to make a profit, but not as much as the $15,000 over MSRP that they are posting for on Ebay. I would like to get one sold quickly...so don't wait too long. One of mine is already ordered...but they've told me I can change the color/options if I get with them fairly quickly.
I know all the typical questions....
1)No, I don't know MSRP yet.
2) No, I don't have delivery date yet.
3) Yes, I do have a signed sales agreement with my dealer to purchase at some amount over MSRP.
4) Yes, there is a gas guzzler tax on this vehicle
5) Yes, I did have to pay the $1,500 "dealer participation fee" since my dealer was not SVT certified...so you'll have to pay that as well.
6) It is a coupe, not a vert
7) I am in Indiana, you would be able to pick up the car at the dealership...you'd simply pay me to "take my place in line". I do have a non-refundable deposit at the dealer.
8) Sales tax in Indiana is 6%
Let me know...SOON!

This week I got the information from my dealer on the Shelby GT500. They did have 1 available to reserve, but it required a 25K deposit to hold and the car is to be sold for 35K over MSRP, which is around 80K for the vert!! I know this is a cool car, but it aint that cool!! I'm stickin with my '99 vert for now. The Saleen SC coupe is around 58K and the vert is around 62K. A fully loaded Roush stage 3 vert is around 56K fully loaded. I got these prices this week after getting the information on the Shelby. Ford really needs to make a more reasonable priced driver that's a cut above the GT!

In 1965 the MSRP for the Shelby GT350 was nearly twice that as the mustang fastback. Was there a markup then?

For $70K you can get a new Z06, which will totally kick any Ford, SVT, Rousch, Saleen, Steeda, etc. Mustang butt!
I'm sorry, but ANY Mustang over $40K just isn't worth it!

Phillips Ford in Phillips Wisconsin has a GT500 on order. You can get it for something over sticker but nothing like these prices. Ask for Steve!
I'll wait for the 08 before I determine what I want. I kind of like the GT H that Shelby/Hertz?Ford are putting out. They are only going to make 500 of them.

I received a brochure in the mail from Ford last week. The "cover" says "SNEAK". The brochure is promoting "Bold Moves" and especially the GT 500 Shelby. The Cover/opening has 1/2 of the front end photo of the car and they call it a Shelby Cobra GT 500 and they claim that it has 450 bhp!!!! Ford is advertising their car based on 3-6 month old info? This was NOT a cheap brochure!!!
Meanwhile, back at the ranch, I received my latest Road and Track with its first actual driving analysis of the Shelby GT 500. Without going into any detail, I will tell you that the 03/04 SVT Cobras run a better 0-60, 1/4 mile and still retained its IRS. The 07s lost their IRS and are still slower than the 03-04s !!!! :jawdrop:
As Howard Cossell would say, "What a pathetic performance!" :barfy:

And even more confusion! Hot Rot magazine (http://www.hotrod.com/toc/thismonth/) writes of the Shelby GT500 as if it were the second coming of Christ! The GAH GAH article goes so far as to say the IRS on the 03/04 is a problem. The cover says it runs in the low 12s, but careful reading shows the time to be only an estimate. So much for critical review.

I don't see why anyone would pay $65K for a pretty mustang (Saleen) with a 4.6L (stock mustang engine) with a "pretty" blower and tune on it. The GT 500, for $41K after nastalgia, will provide you with a 5.4L, DOHC, 4V, forged internal part engine. This is a "no brainer."

Actually if my current SVT is quicker than the GT500, maybe I'll keep it since it is almost paid for. If what the previous posters said is true about the GT500's performance, the car might be way overpriced, considering they added 110 horsepower. For 60k I could get a Corvette, perish the thought.

The horsepower will be different! I paid $50,000 on the road for my GT-500. I believe the Saleens have a 3 valve 5.4 where the GT-500 has 4 valve cobra-jet heads, the same heads that's on the GT. And you can have your car tuned to deliver mega horsepower. Currently mine is making 570 rwhp with 560# of torque. That is equal to 625 fly wheel horses.
