View Full Version : Svtoa On-track Novice Passing Rules

Last year there was a lot of talk (negative) about the Novice passing rules: No passing on the first day. Many return drivers were unhappy with getting jammed up into slow moving packs by 1st Timers, they were not allowed to pass on the first day.

I would like to suggest a little change:

Novice Group 1A - 1st Timers - No passing on the first day

Novice Group 1B - 2nd or more Timers - Controlled passing allowed on first day.

Thanks for the suggestion...it will be considered for the 2006 event.

The problem with adding another run group is that it would decrease the amount of track time everyone gets (going from four run groups to five). Another possiblity would be to have no passing in Group 1 and controlled passing (as much as THAT is possible... :) )in Group 2.

Keep in mind, our plan was to add passing to both groups during the afternoon at Shenandoah, but that nasty rain showered kinda through a monkey-wrench into our plans.

Also, Shenandoah is the ONLY track where we had a "no passing" rule in 2005, due in large part to, 1) large run groups, 2) new track to EVERYONE and 3) limited passing opportunities afforded at Shenandoah.

But, thanks for voicing your concern and suggestions... it WILL be taken into consideration.

Be safe out there!

Jeff,

I do not recall if it was in 2004 or 2005 that the Novice Group was so large that it was divided into 2 sub-groups.

I guess this would be good is such a thing happened again.

Anyway... Thanks for giving this some consideration.

Cheers! :tmb:

Jeff and company, Anything you can do to relieve the traffic jambs in the novice group on the first day would be greatly appreciated. Sunday was awesome last year.I was considering skipping saturday and just doing sunday in 2006

I know of one novice that plans to make his first On Track in 2006. I'm also working on a few of the Lightning guys to join us this year. :spinem:

Jaimie,

Congratulations... That will make a nice addition to your training wheels. Although I didn't realize they made them in your size. :jawdrop:

BTW... With the new addition, when will you be trading in the Cobra for the mini-van? :haha:

Thanks! No, I'm not trading the Cobra for a minivan. I traded the Rover for this last Saturday:

Jamie,

Sweet ride! But, why didn't you wait for the SVT Adrenaline?

I'd love to say that there's even a chacne that I'd get there, but I can't risk putting money down and not being able to make it because something comes up. Y'all need to buy Dusing a couple of drinks for me!

Jamie's already planning ahead, that's why he's purchasing a Simpson car seat with his SVTOA discount. :hehe: He'll be back diaper bag in hand in 2007! :haha: I can't believe you traded the Rover for a Explorer! :barfy: Should have waited for the Adrenalin!

She's pregnant and wanted a vehicle that wouldn't leave us sitting on the side of the road AGAIN! We'll be revisiting the Adrenalin when it comes out. :hehe:

If you aren't going to be there Jamie who is going to be harassing us Canadians? :)
And I want my $0.25 back then. heh

I'm still planning on a return trip to Summit Point in '06.
Love that track! Love the drive there too. :)

But to respond to the actual post...
Making a separate group will allow less time on the track and possibly only put a few cars on the track at a time.

Would changing the order the cars lineup help? Putting "newbies" out last?
Then again, it'll still be a problem if there's no passing at all.

Meh... I ran intermediate at Summit Point this year and I was passed at every occasion. :) Wasn't driving as hard as I could have been and after one lap I pitted and went back out with beginner - was a little better. :) (on Sunday afternoon)

Perhaps there should be a checkbox on the form for returning attendees. This way you could still run novice but have the returnees all in the same run group and first timers in a separate novice group.

Jeff, I guess you've considered whether the instructors could decide when their student is ready to pass. But I guess if Summit was the only place with the problem, then next year when it's not new, it may not be an issue. Did we have more than 100 last year? Or is it because Shenandoah was tight in some areas? It is a bigger track than Jefferson on '04.
