My 02L has a loud pop from the front end when I cut the wheel all the way to the left. It's the only time it does it. There is no mods to front end all stock. Any ideas.
Thanks Steve

I do not believe that I have experienced this "clunking". I do get the usual popping of the tie rod ends binding up at full lock in either direction but nothing like what is being described in that thread.

From what I understand, the "clunk" occurs when turning at speed over a grade change like a driveway ramp. If it only happens when the wheel is cranked to it's limits, I think your steering stops just need greasing.
It is common to think you have the clunk if your stops are dry. The same thing happened to me on the 99 I had. ;)

I'll try greasing the steering stops. Hope that does the trick. Need to change oil and filter anyway. So I'll lube them while I'm at it.
What tpye of grease would you reccomend?
Thanks for every help.

Heavy lithium grease is what the Ford tech put on and what I have used since.

Got any pictures of where to grease them at? I haven't looked at it too much cause I chalked up to being something that ever reciculating ball steering system I have seen and used did.

No pictures off hand. Maybe I can get some over the weekend if I get a chance.
They are pretty easy to find. They look like bolt heads sticking out from what I think is the wheel hub and is what stops the wheel from turning to far in and rubbing. Just put the grease on the bolt head. It's been awhile since I've been down that way.

My 2002 had the clunk due to the left control arm.
Took it to the dealer and they tightened it up and did an alignment and it was fine for the whole summer.
However just last week I started hearing the clunk again, got it twice last week. Both times on a hard left turn at low (parking) speed.

I've had my ends greased twice. Once I told the dealer it was making a noise and they fixed it for free. The next time I asked to have them greased and was charged $14.95. The right words can make a difference.;)

I too have a 2002 Lightning and have had the same problem. All you need to do is grease your steering stops with a good water resistant grease. You may need to do this several times a year depending on your driving conditions so it is a good idea just to dab a little grease on them each time you change the oil. Just follow BlueOvalBolts instructions.

The repair of my "clunk" or "pop" was a warranty repair. :geek:

Is there a good reason that the control arm that keeps slipping couldnt just be tack welded in place?

I have a 2001 L. went to dealer for clunk ( only does it when I backup, turning the wheel ), Told dealer about info I read On forum. Dealer checked it out & said it's the rearend poping while backing & turning. Is dealer crazy or has anyone else heard this excuse ? Mick.:wtf:

I took My L in to have the steering wheel centered and took the suspension man for a ride to show him the clunk from the RIGHT REAR and he showed me it was play in the axel that was part of the plan to prevent binding. NO problem. I feel better now. 'Already been thru the dry steering stops on the front.
